Last night I had to go and check on one of my horses, who are a 6 mile round trip in the depth of the countryside .... and it got me thinking

Is there anyone out there who goes up every night to see their horses, late at night, when you have a bit of a trip to get there ???????

I would be really impressed if you do

I check all 45 of mine every night at midnight.

.....but I do only live 20 steps away from all of my fields.

When he's in the stable or on the back in winter I go up at about 11pm to give another haylage and fill water, give a hug and a kiss and take droppings out but that only about 15-20 foot away.

What's wrong with the horse you had to check on?? Hope it's nothing serious?

If I don't make it to the yard during the day I will go when I can, last night it was about 9.30pm. Its a 40 odd mile round trip!

I don't think I could cope with that for a 'quick' check

Does someone else see to them in the morning and evening?

I think I'd look for somewhere nearer.

Ooooh, you are going to hate me - mine are at home and depending on whether they are on the main yard or the stables out the back................ either 20 steps or 40. Almost time for the 'colic check', rugs on and nets up. The stables are very big and airy so they need rugs on or they'll chill.

Of course we used to when I lived at my parents home with our own land and stables, but now I keep mine at livery... well, I do go back late at night if Im worried, but not normally. I have also been known to wake up with a feeling of dread at 2am and drive to the yard, to find a horse quietly munching hay and perfectly content.....

I totally read the title wrong!!

I was thinking that you'd go and check your horses, but they'd be out, as in not home.....

*Slaps forehead*

Duh!!

Oh CassandraRose .... I hope I never have to do that .... but knowing me I will do one of these days

Thank goodness I sleep well even when worried about things

Another of the only have to cross the yard brigade, I'm afraid. I always go out about midnight to make sure all are upright and ok.

only if i'm worried, went every night last week as he decide he doesn't like the new horse next door and is killing the hell out of the panels but he is only 2 minutes drive away

our YO does a late night check at around 10.30/11 to make sure all the horses are alright and to make sure the tack rooms etc are locked up. if you ask them nicely they will also chuck over some hay etc for the horses. its really useful as i know if there where any problems they would be straight on the phone to me

LOL I have a tendancy to wake my husband up, tell him Im worrying about Domi, keep him awake for an hour whilst I fret about whether to drive to the yard (usually in the driving rain/hail/wind) until he says "Oh for heavens sake, just go, and let me get back to sleep".

I can't believe how many of you are still awake at midnight!

My have a last proper check 8.30ish and a quick glance and listen when the dogs go out before I go to bed, usually 11ish.

Not at the moment but have that pleasure to come. Have finally managed to buy own yard and will probably be making late night checks en route home from work at all sorts of wierd times.

Wasn't too bothered by the prospect until the 80 year old neighbour told me a pond at the site was filled in some years ago cos some woman drowned in it

my horses are 5 mins away by car , if one is injured or poorly i drive down and check at 11 ish before bed , or as many times in night as nessesary , i recently parked hubbies works van outside stable and sat in it all night keeping an eye on my colt who had had surgery that afternoon for a retained testicle , bliddy uncomfortable old crate it was!, our YO walks around before bed , of course when they are out in summer paddocks its far more difficult

NO not now, too far away from her...but when we spent a bit in Oxfordshire, she was 10 steps away from the house....so I spent most of the time riding or sitting in the field with her. Gave me a hell of a shock when, at 5 in the morning, I went to check on her (couldn't sleep) and she wasn't in the field.... She had popped into the polo ponies field and was having a party with them....silly sod...
