I have just been reading the BHS thread at the top of this forum. Lots of people seem to have a BHS Gold Membership for the main purpose of insurance - me included. However, I read one or two threads where they had actually claimed ..... and it wasn't a very happy experience.

Is there any other commercial insurer who just does PL insurance for horses, without having to had vets fees, etc.

The small print of the BHS gold membership is horrific!!!

Public liability is a must have and I wish really wish that the BHS would take responsibility and remind members what they ACTUALLY get for it!

Lycetts do public liability.

NFU also.

Yes it will cost a bit but far better to be covered than to find out you have to sell your house to cover the costs!

I gave up my gold membership when my friend went to claim after having her leg kicked whilst riding breaking it in 3 places. Went to claim from BHS only to find she had to LOSE HER LEG just to get 10k! Absolutely shocking!

BSJA club membership state that it offers public liability, don't know anything about it though:o

It is part of o

I just have the third party part of NFU policy to protect us if ponies cause damage, I think pet plan also offer it. I also have public liability if someone has an accident round our stables or land with saga as part of household insurance.

Foraday you are talking about the personal accident cover not the third party cover. Third party kicks in when for example your horse strays onto a road and causes an accident.

You need to check the excess and the total amount of cover with any PL insurance.

You can get cover for public liability from any of the horse insurance companies, and many find they have it on their polucy already. However BHS membership is particularly useful and economical for those who ride ither peoples horses regularly

That's not public liability thats personal accident and the terms are very clear on that.
My experiance of the BHS liability insurance was very good .

A quick question from an insurance numpty. My horse is going to my neighbour's for the summer on 'loan' (no money being exchanged, she is doing me a massive favour as I'm pregnant) so what sort of insurance do I need? He is 21 so not bothered about vets fees, just wanted something in case he damages their property, ponies or them!
The other night someone suggested BHS gold pl but now I'm not so sure.
Thanks and sorry for hijack.

Most of the third party insurances that you get through societies are a 'policy of last resport', which is why they can offer them more cheaply. If you have coverage elsewhere they will expect you to go through that, so getting them to agree to take the claim on may be painful but once they have it should be the same as any other insurance policy.

A lot of house insurance policies give third party in connection with horses as a standard addition - check your small print.
