Basically our grass is very low now and horse has been getting bored so as well as his treat ball I've started putting small piles of hifi lite around field (basically two scoops but put into handful sized piles) to make horse move around and keep him interested. Also been putting apples/carrots round field. It's made a huge difference already and he loves it too.

He is moving fields on tuesday so it's only a temporary thing but I wondered if anyone else was doing this or has done it?

Before anyone says feed hay, we could only get new hay so holding off feeding it ATM xx

Mine had ad lib hay in bare field last winter and I spread it about to last longer and avoid fights. Gave them carrots and apples hidden in the hay too. Good grass this year so unlikely to need to.

Mine is eating new hay

I've done it before - from feeding buckets dotted around the field for one who couldn't eat hay (it was her "hay replacer" slop in the buckets) to scattering grass pellets / high fibre nuts around. Anything to make them forage and/or move around rather than stand and pig on a bale of hay!

So no, you're not mad, it's a good idea! :)

never done it myself really apart from the odd veg thrown here and there
i think its a good idea and if he enjoys finding it then why not :)
think it would blow away in this weather atm tho..

I do for little Tinks. She's a mini, and in a fairly bare paddock so I sprinkle hi fibre chaff and hay around her paddock to keep her occupied and keep her moving. It's definitely worked and keeps are going for hours :D

We scatter carrots around the field to keep ours entertained if theres not much grass. They get their hay in well spread out piles in winter so they move around. They are on a new field so theres plenty of grass at the moment.
