This is the first time I have encountered the problem

I have a mare that doesn't really bother to either position her self correctly or pick up her tail when relieving herself

Its not like she can't, as when playing her tail is quite capable of going up!

The result is when she stales the urine is in both her tail and down the hind legs. The end result is not causing problems, other than she reeks.

This happens with and without rugs, so guessing nothing can be done?

I've never encountered with any of my mares. One I think had a break/fracture in tail as picks up to the side, but still does.

Although not causing problems now I should imagine it could make the skin quite raw? So definitely worth asking further.

Yep - with our shetland companion. She is in her 30's though. Even more disgusting when in season and you get that as well as urine down legs and in the tail!

My mare's aim was not quite what it should be when she was younger. It was always the near hind. She's now rising 7 and has excellent positioning.

How old is your mare?

She may improve as she matures

Eww, gross- we had a little old mare like that! Felt like I was forever washing her back end down and forever smelling like her myself! would do anything to have her back though!

Only when in season. 18 yrs old.
Wash her legs with diluted aloe Vera shampoo every other day throughout her season and tail at the end of it with concentrated shampoo.
