I had a few ppl sl*g me off for having a personal trainer - just wondering ppl's views on it, and if anyone else has one?

WHo works out at the gym to help with their riding or just does it anyway?

I work out regularly in my lunch breaks at work and have used a personal trainer in the past but found since I moved to London it is waaay to expensive. I think certain exercises definatly help and keeping fitness levels up when riding more intensely helps no end!
Maybe theyre jealous you have one! My old one was v.cute - definatly a motivation factor!

Agree, it's your choice!! I suppose my 4 year old ponio is a bit of a personal trainer at the moment!!! Certainly leaves me exhausted with new ideas and games every day!!!! Would not have the energy for real one I don't think..

I used to go to the gym to help with my riding although I haven't recently as I am low on money so all I am doing at the moment is cycling to and from work and a pilates DVD at home.
Personally I think it is a great thing to do, all the instructors I know encourage people go to the gym in order to help with their riding. IMO I would say the people slagging you off are jealous.

Yep..... take no notice.

Core stability is really important for riding and massively under attended to when considering you and your horses performance.

I have a gym membership, But have recently taken up running which is keeping the dogs happy. I have noticed I am able to sit much more quietly and for so much longer with my youngster which has enabled us to progress more effectively.

As for personal trainers .... how fantastic to be able to have a program designed to target the areas you need to to help you with your sport. And much more motivating I would guess too!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks everyone!

SInce losing a lot of weight, ive improved no end and now have gone from riding the RS plod (im going to RS while my ned is off with injury) to riding the 17.2hh Dressage Schoolmaster (hes an Oldenburg and goooorrrrgeous!) - its a reward in itself!!!!

I can even work him in an outline (which the instructor commented that even a lady who has rode for years at a dressage yard cant even get out of him!). My comment to that was ''so a girl who has rode for 3 years and rides trampy horses is better LOL!''. Made me feel great!

My PT is gorg too haha! Hes introduced me to boxing as well - great fat burner and good for all limbs, speed, stamina and core stability!!

my OH is a personal trainer... he helps me with exercises at home but i hate the gym so we do core stability/weights etc in the lounge!

Well then there is your answer, people (me included
grin.gif
) are jealous of you and what you are achieving well done! Weight loss, gorgeous horses and PT, I think I need to get myself a PT if I can achieve this!

Jesterfaerie - if only the Oldenburg was mine hehe - everything would be perfect!!

My poor ned is at physio yard getting rehabilitated after a ligament injury bless him (missing him lots too).

He went last week and there for 5 weeks of intense physio, groundwork and ultrasound (he had been a bit dodgy for a while, before vet decided on scans and xrays):(.

Should hopefully recover, providing theres no bone damage that they couldnt see on xray.

Its weird - i was looking forward to a horsey break, but i almost get in the car to go to the yard lol and miss doing his exercises and taking him for his inhand walks - we really bonded!!

Its interesting how jealousy can cause people to react that way!!

Good for you I say!

Since downsizing I have down sized my fitness training. You know those big infalatble balls you can do exercises on?

I have gone one step further mine is the size of a ping pong ball and is pink and white striped and rattles.

Twice a day my Torty cat Tiggy trains me. I have to throw it up the stairs then she races up the stairs past it and hides under the bed.

I race up the stairs collecting it on my way and run to the bedroom door. She shoots through my legs skids to a halt at the top of the stairs and then crouches down waiting for me to throw again.

Depending on how fit she thinks I am this can go on for ages or she will throw in the proverbial towel indicated by lying upside down and washng her paws.

Well I have my fingers crossed he recovers soon

It is surprising how the little things can create such a bond, I inhand walk mine quite a lot recently (no saddle and fields to wet to work in) and I love it, certinaly does create a bond imo.

Out of interest ....

how much weight have you lost?
are you still losing?
how much does the pt cost over and above your gym costs?

You don't have to answer any of these questions if you don't wish to

My dad owns a gym and I am very fortunate to get free sessions with the personal trainer.I have found that the riding gave me a good base for some of the exercises and now the exercises are helping my riding.

You do what you want with your money
laugh.gif
I detect hints of jealousy from these people

Wow, have never heard anyone criticized for gym membership - other than the usual theme of paying and never going
wink.gif

I go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week, have a personal trainer ocassionally (maybe 1-2 times a month), and do at least one class a week. Mainly because otherwise I put on weight!

Find pilates classes fantastic for my riding, really beneficial.
I generally feel better for the more exercise I do - have just started British Military Fitness boot camps - OMG makes my personal trainer look like a total fairy! Is agony, and can barely walk for three days afterwards, but definitely feels like it's working

Quirky, its fine!

Ive lost 5 1/2 stone since February 09 (horseys back was main concern) and i swore to the physio i would do it! - he did say that ned is up to weight so shouldnt have caused his injury - although wouldnt have done it any favours!) I was ill thinking about it, so knew i HAD to do something.

Another half to a stone to lose, its harder now thou, getting to the end. Its made my life sooooo different - i love it! Have lost same amount before, but didnt ride then so didnt have push to keep it off.

Ive been on a programme called Freaky Eaters also to try and help me 3 years ago - it actually made me worse!

PT is £20 per session, and i do boxing class once a week that is £4, all extra to gym membership, so not that bad, considering the difference to my life!

Life story over LOL!

I am about to join the universitys campus gym, and *hope* to go most days, as I really want to improve my riding through being fitter and loosing a few hundred weight wouldnt hurt either
tongue.gif

Considering its a 3 minute walk from halls, i think i could manage it
tongue.gif

but no personal trainer, just weights, rowing maching and treadmill for me!
tongue.gif

i go to the gym and take spinnig classes- i love it!!!! it helps with the core stregth and means that i can be as fit as poss to ride!!! I use the instructors when i want a review. Good on you for going and bothering!!! If i could afford a PT i would for sure!!!

OMG i dont know how you guys all fit it in. Other than the horse no spare time other than to work, share cooking/ cleaning and see the OH....... then time for bed!

I have a gym membership and go to the gym once or twice a week and also do Pilates four times a week. All of this is covered by the gym membership. I have a hideous back and have had surgery and was told I would never ride again. Was then sent to another surgeon who couldn't do more surgery but suggested I did all this fitness stuff ( I wasn't exactly unfit either) It has made a huge difference to my whole body and core strength. My back is so much stronger and now even though I still have to take loads of pain killers I am riding again and even competing at dressage. Take no notice of people who laugh at you. It is very important and if I had done it earlier I wouldn't be in this position now. Look after you body. Riding alone doesn't work everything and in fact messes parts up. I would recommend Pilates to everyone who rides as it has helped my riding and position no end. It has been my saviour.

Take care

At my school we have a leisure centre with a gym
grin.gif

This term for P.E I chose to go to the gym during my lessons
smile.gif
If you want to do extra sessions they are charged at £2 a go after school .

I usually just go on the running and cycling machines and I do love thescreen on each machine telling you how many calories you have burnt off
tongue.gif

Thanks for your replys guys!

Its nice to know im not the only one who runs around like a headless chicken fitting
tongue.gif
everything into my schedule, and how much we all do to improve our riding and keep fit!

I must try a pilates class too, have heard very good things from you all and even some instructors i have had. Especially when ive got one wonkey knee, which means i ride more through one side of my body!

This dressage schoolmaster is good because he shows up all your faults
crazy.gif

Well done cob 1 i am 2 and 3/4 into 4 stone loss so keep up excellent work!!! I have found that all exercise helps my loss joints as they used to dislocate like a behatch!!! but now not so bad
smile.gif
I am sooo stretched with time but fortunatly baby nag doesnt need riding every day as he still has oodles of growing to do so 3/4 times to ride 2/3 times gym then post on HHO whilst marking and doing lesson prep
