Why should anyone slag you off? It is your choice and your money! I would love to be able to afford one!!

I agree. Well said. It is your choice. They are probably just jealous!

If you can afford a PT then go for it. I am a member at a private gym, and have had a couple of taster PT sessions. Wish I could afford it full time, but sadly no. that is not to be

I don't have a personal trainer but do have a gym membership but for the last few years I've hardly gone...between working on a night and horses I don't have the time. However, I don't cancel it as I love the fact that I can go if I want to and the pool will not be full of my students! I really should start going more often if it will make me a better rider.....any help in that dept is a bonus

Quick note to OP, I'd not worry about what others think. It's what YOU think that matters. And truth be known, that a personal trainer will ensure that you do the exercises correctly thus avoiding: injury, wasting your time and money on membership, and get the most out of your efforts. Lifting weights is easy. Lifting them CORRECTLY is not without a knowledgeable person to assist. Sometimes you need a spotter to avoid injury if lifting.

I weight trained for about 6 years, and ALWAYS had a PT, and loved it. I'd still be doing it if I had the time and money...and I'm sure my riding would improve if I could get to the gym, do some yoga, pilates and cardio...the lifting maybe would help keep me fit for doing beds etc. Since I stopped lifting 4 years ago, I have gained a stone (or maybe more

), have lost flexibility, suppleness and definitely strength. I need them all for my job, let alone riding! So keep it up!

(okay, maybe not so quick reply...)

I have had two personal trainers (not at the same time) and they were worth every penny - we worked really hard together, but more than that I've learned enough theory from them to make my own programmes now and get on with the expense of paying for them anymore. I'd highly recommend them!

I definitely do some specific gym work to help my riding: I row because it really develops arm muscles as well as lats, which I find useful for stronger horses that pull and also for jumping (lats only). I also do core exercises and yoga for better posture, and warm up my hips and calves with yoga exercises before I leave for the yard. I also do other CV, mainly running, as any good CV workout is good for riding - you won't end up puffed out after just a few laps of canter or a round of jumps!

I had a few ppl sl*g me off for having a personal trainer - just wondering ppl's views on it, and if anyone else has one?

WHo works out at the gym to help with their riding or just does it anyway?

How dare anyone say that! I had a personal trainer last year and it boosted me to get fitter.

A fitter rider helps the horse to perform at its absolute best! :D
