i have to change my mares bit every few months. she seems to take about 3 months to figure out a bit and then work out how to lean on it and avoid work with it.

does anyone else have this problem, it is starting to turn into an expensive habit

yes!! my old boy was a nightmare - it took him about 15 mins to sort out exactly what was in his mouth. to do my dressage teste I would warm up in a vulcanite pelham - then quickly change him into a hanging cheek vulcanite snaffle - exactly the same size and dimensions as teh pelham. i had about 15 mins to get through my test and get out before he worked it out. I would school in a different bit every day and rotate my 15 bits including the pelham so I could get him to work for me.

Strangely enough it was only every flatwork that required the bit changing. Jumping he was a total star in his pelham and hacking he could do in a happy mouth loose ring.

Yes, have just added a libby's scrawbrig bridle to the d-ring waterford bridle and the NS verbindend bridle that clutter the boot of my car. hey ho.

I have this problem with my lad, although he tends to work a on a timescale of one ride then he's got it figured! He tends to figure it out then work out possible routes out it. Currently I rotate a loose-ring french link, a cherry roller, a waterford, and a dr bristol and double bridle :P I also have to switch the nosebands too which go from either the grackle or the kineton.

I save my flatwork bit for flatwork only now, we have had a few changes over the years hoping can stick for a bit now!
I dont use it for anything else, I can jump in it but dont (loose ring thiinish snaffle). Have always used a hanging cheek to jump in, gag to hack (only as spooky welsh otherwise) and pelham for xc.

Yes, on the advice of Micks dentist I should change bits every 2 weeks.

I school normally in a snaffle, but am currently using a sweet iron.

I hack and jump at home on a copper roller.

I jump at comps on a waterford snaffle.

and I hunt on a waterford gag.

I have the hole settings for bridle for each bit written on my stable wall. lol.

Yup - flatwork in a Neue Schule loose ring snaffle, jump and hack (SJ and XC) in a NS universal, and show in a NS pelham. We do workers in the universal though due to my inability to cope with 2 reins over fences!
