I pay £1.00 for lights at my yard, but reading many posts on here most of you seam to get "free schools". Anyone else pay for lights or even usage, and if the schools are free are they well maintained ?

Also have to pay for lights haven't used them yet this winter yet so not sure if it's still the same amount but think it's about £1.50 per hour.

On a previous yard we used to pay for lights. There was an honesty box and if I remember correctly, it was £1/half hour.

At that same yard, 4 of us used to have the same jump instructor and so had our lesson on the same night. We were asked to pay £4 each for exclusive use of the school.

We have to pay for lights (on my current yard - soon to be old on sunday

! ) £1 for 30 mins in a meter.

My friend though pays £21 just for a stable and has to pay extra for everything including grazing!! Her school is £4 a hour and lights £1

Me, and Im not too happy about it! Im on a small yard, (5 horses, 2 of which are YO's). We have to pay £3.00 per hour/use (still £3 if we use it for 10 mins) and Ive heard he charges £6 in winter (he has another think coming if he thinks Im paying that!). Its just a sand school, no lights except one on the rear of the stable block not sure on the size but probably around 40 x 20 mtr and has no fence around it. YO says the cost is to cover him using the diesel in his tractor to flatten the surface. Fair enough but in the 2 1/2 months Ive been there its been done once! Ive not used it for at least 2 weeks and my friend has only used it once and dont think the other livery uses it at all.
We dont mind paying but think £3 is too much for what we get and would rather pay say £10 for a months usage.

Snowysadude - well i hope it is a pristine 100m x 80 m school with a set of "runners" for that much! I used to be on a yard about 10 years ago that used to charge £2.50 per HALF hour, but you did not pay any extra for lights, and the school was reasonlaby maintained.

At my last yard the school was free, but no lights and it was not well maintained.

school and lights are free but if you book it for a lesson is is £7.50 which I think is awful considering its a college and supposed to encourage people to improve

School and lights are free but it is a part or full livery yard. DIY yards I've been on have always run the lights off meters. Having said that I've never been at a yard where I've had to pay separately to use the school.

Yep a pound for 30 mins at my old yard and a fiver to use the indoor. You do get "Free riders" tho who I'm sure tack up and wait for someone else to pop ther pound in before joining you in the arena !! grr

use of school free for individual use during 'daylight' hours

£3 for an hour if you use the lights

Don't think that's too much really considering the costs of electricity.

edited to say its an indoor one too and graded everyday with the tractor and harrow but does get a lot of use!

I have to pay £10 an hour for use of my school lights so often end up in the dark with all the stables lights on - horse is far less spooky in the dark funnily enough. Would quite happily pay this if it was a good school but it isn't

gingerwitch - i totally agree the school should be like that for her yard to pay so much!! Shes mental staying there - tried to convince me to move there to help her out - i said in her dreams :P!!

where i had my horse at livery last year when i was at university the YO's where the tightest bu**ers ever!!! you were only aloud to use the school twice a week as part of your livery (as riding damaged the brand new surface???) and it was £15 every other time you wanted to ride!! (i might have used it an extra few times when they were out

No, thank god. It would really put me off moving to a yard where you have to pay. I'm rarely in there for an hour... also what if you have a baby and do 15m a day? Seems quite unreasonable to me.

Not bothered about school being fabulously lit, just enough so you can do flatwork in there. Would be a major put off point for me.

My rent goes up £5 per month in the winter to cover all the lights, school stables etc...
Thats all though...no hiden extras, but it is very much a DIY yard, fencing school etc are maintained.

I pay £5 per hour to use the school at my DIY yard

The YO said when he built the school, he asked all the liveries whether they would prefer their fees to go up, or whether they'd like to just pay as they go. They opted for the latter!

Yes £25 a month as it has been newly resurfaced and so far is standing up to all weathers.

Rest of livery is cheap though, so price paid per month even if you use the school is competitive, and if you don't use the school down right cheap.

All those who have a school but do not think you pay for it, bet you do but it is already loaded into you livery fees.
