My mare was being very silly earlier coming in for our lesson because of the weather and her gate slammed behind her! I have found singing to her distracts her a bit and keeps me from getting anxious because of her behaviour! She is very fond of nursery rimes!

Does anyone else do this or any other silly things?

" if ever I am afraid I whistle a happy tune and nobody will know I am scared " is our spooky song normally bellowed out via clenched teeth :-) gets us some silly looks I wonder why ?!

Yes! I found it really helped my youngster when we first hacked alone.
I also sing to my cob mare, Blaze, then give her a silly voice and she sings too! But she just goes 'lalalala' because she can never remember the words ;) We also have long conversations whilst hacking.
Yes I am probably certifiably nuts :D Do I care? Not at all!

Yes I sing to him when hes unsettled while we are out riding which is not often now - as a 5 year old I would sing to him out hacking - not sure if it helps him more or me :D

No, I like horses too much to inflict my tone deaf wailing on them. Although singing is a brilliant way to stop tension in both horse & rider. My voice is so awful though I could win the national on a 3 legged shettie if I sang at it, it would run so fast to try & escape the dreadful noise.

Oh I do all the time! I tend to sing the original coke song. All together now.....I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony.........! lol

Singing helps relax horses because you start breathing regularly and evenly not holding your breath in!

I sing when I muck out and then whitter along and sing when I am out hacking - love watching the horses ears flick back and forth listening to me hit a particularly bum note!

All the time :) 'twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you a.. WOAH ***** A WHEELIE BIN' is a fave at the moment :p

Hahaha :D my TB knows that song well! Our version has additional verses ending in:
WOAH ***** A MANHOLE COVER!!!
" " A STORM DRAIN!!!
" " A STRANGE LOOKING FLOWER
and the final verse ends WOAH...............WTF IS THAT?????? :D

i hum or whistle... i wouldnt inflict such horrors of my singing on the poor horses but i hum while hacking or schooling as it helps me relax and therefore helps the horse relax so we get a better schooling session or quieter hack :)

omg yes! my mare is currently on box rest and she hates it, she gets soooo wound up.So the other morning i realised whilst on the phone to other people she stopped her calling whilst i was talking to other people, as if she was listening to my voice. So i had a brain wave *ouch* :p . So as i was doing my jobs i was singing, we had coldplay, fairground attraction, spice girls and some guns & roses lol i did start queen" i want to break free" then thought "thats not appropriate, best not encourage her" she seemed to like fairground attraction best!! the boy in keeping her company wasnt too happy with my tone deafness and was pulling faces at me!! :D

I think there is science behind why it helps in spooky/stressy situations, if you are singing you can't hold your breath (easy to do when said pony is being a pain!) and if your breathing normally your body will naturally be a little more relaxed and your horse will pick up on that - hence why a little tune past a 'monster' will often help!

I am a musician and have done a fair amount of study on horses and music. I have found that many of them are pitch sensitive and have a particular note/key they like and relax to.
Years ago I had TB who had dangerous tendencies. If we met something out hacking which I thought might spark him off I used to sing in his favourite key(Gmajor BTW,very commonly liked by horses) I am sure it used to help him focus and calm him down. It would not have helped me because I hate singing!
I am currently experimenting with pitch sensitivity and plan to do some demo's next year to highlight the effect of music on horses.

So keep singing and whistling. It might soon become the new thing....:)

I always sing! Copa Cobana and I Need A Dollar are my 2 currents. I change the words to Copa and make it about the horses.

I used to always sing when galloping the racehorses. It does settle them.

they're normally inflicted with what is in the charts atm......

but since beginning of december they've had: rudolf the red nose reindeer and we wish you a merry christmas on replay......

not sure if they enjoy the screaming/screaching, seem bit bored of them now...but where else can you sing to your hearts content and not get ridiculed for it :D

Me too! I do it when I girth her up and putting on her hoof boots because it helps m to relax and stop being so fussy which helps her to stay relax. I also belt out Gloria gaynor stylee when we are on a hack. This thread has just reminded me That I brought some rhythm beads a while back for the musical side. Must fish them out.

Yes! All the time! A particular favourite is "a sailor went to sea sea sea to see what he could see see see..."! I used to do this when passing scary things as its a good rhythm to keep a walk to. Also as Dora said, keeps you breathing and calm, and also gives the horse something else (eg. Awful singing) to be scared of!

There are other ones that I insert my horses name into, but these make me look slightly more barmy and I don't have a good reason for these, I just enjoy them :D

Of course !! ( only when nobody's around...)
My horse is very into the latest tunes ;)
Also it helps me to stop holding my breath and talk to him when he is spooking so it relaxes him more :)

Um yes. :o Especially when riding young horses that I'm not sure of. The problem is, the only song I know all the way through is the National Anthem (NZ) and a verse of Rhinestone Cowboy. :D
