So basically I had a really sore coccyx after riding last week and I put it down to poor choice of undergarments. Today (suitable attired) I went out on a hack. general trotting and a little canter and gallop across open fields. However, I have a really sore Coccyx again.....any tips on reducing this pain. Is it something I am doing wrong from a riding perspective?

The horse I ride is on loan and therefore he just comes with the saddle that is at the yard. I also ride in Jodphurs....not sure if that makes any difference....

I have problems with my coccyx generally, having fallen on the cross bar of a bike in my teens and then breaking it during childbirth. However, riding (and I do alot of hacking!!) has never caused me a problem. I can't help though as to why you might be suffering, maybe get yourself checked out by an osteopath or get a RI to have a look at your position??

Have you been riding regularly for a while? I was in a world of pain when I started sharing again, bruised inner thighs ouch! I do still get a sore back as I am trying to sit up straight and improve my position, I watched a good video about better rising trot from heather Moffat on youtube and my back has felt much better now I have altered it, but that's just me as my rising trot was rubbish! I do still kind of feel like I'm arching my back backwards quite a lot but otherwise I seem to slouch :-( oh also I changed my stirrup length down a hole which has made it better too and might go down another one :-)

I've been riding once or twice a week for a while and haven't had any problems in the school or hacking out apart from last week. I'm wondering if I bruised myself badly and that it still hasn't settled properly.

Would wearing full seat breeches help over wearing jods?

There is a specific condition which is an inflammation of the coccyx called coccyxdinia...google it to find out more...it is incredibly painful and has symptoms such as you describe, usually the pain is worse on getting up/off from where seated and is apparently common where there has been trauma to the coccyx..:(
I had it extensively last year, many years after a motorbike accident, so you have my every sympathy for any kind of coccyx problem...several sessions with a good osteopath sorted it out eventually..
Good luck!

Ooh yes I bruised my coccyx slipping over on high heels and it does take a long time to get better! How about a sheepskin seat saver that would probably help absorb a bit of shock and wouldn't interfere with the tack you could just take it with you :-)

I have a back injury, and the heather Moffett seat saver keeps me riding - may be worth looking in to ??

But whatever, i would go to the doctor and get it checked out - easy to chip the coccyx bone. xx
