Does anyone else's horse not get the 'winter coat' memo?

My young boy (rising 4) who I've owned since he was 3 months old has never really grown much of a winter coat except his foal fluff from his first winter. He moults properly but his coat grows back in very short and dense but in no way like a full winter coat like the others. He doesn't seem as warm as the others so is rugged appropriately (usually a fleece under whatever weight the others have on does the job).

Does anyone else's horses grow a pathetic winter coat? I don't start to rug until he's finished shedding so the rugging process isn't hindering his coat growth, just seems to be one of his little quirks! I suppose one bonus is he will probably never need clipping! :P

We have a couple of mares on the yard that hardly grow a winter coat. It is great as they don't need clipping but they do need rugging.

Glad it's not just me! He has the most extensive rug wardrobe of all of them, the others have 4 rugs each and he has about 10 so that I can always make sure he's warm enough. :)
ETA they are all out 24/7 so it's a LW, MW, HW and fleece but he has various stable rugs and fleeces to go under his turn out rugs!

I'll swap mine got the message in august  . I would offer you some of his but I chopped it all off :D although when clipped he doesnt grow much coat.

My arab never grows a winter coat. There's not much difference if any between winter or summer coat and winter coat is still quite shiney too!
No Clipping needed but plenty of rugging through the cold months.

Needless to say he has a good wardrobe of rugs for winter lol

My dutch warmblood mare is shedding her summer coat now and it is being replaced by a slightly thicker version which she considers her winter coat. No, my mare's winter coat would not do her well if she were left unrugged. However I do not have to clip her which is good, but I do have to make sure she is sensibly rugged over the winter months.

My welsh who was a walking, trotting ball of fluff this time last year only has a slightly hairy neck! I have decided to clip on bonfire morning hoping that i'll only have to clip him twice! The shetland on the other hand is sweating as soon as the sun comes out so he definitely got the memo!

Please admire her thick, fluffy winter coat! :p On the plus side, I've never needed to clip her. :)

Very jealous of you tbh. Last two years I've clipped my hairy ID x TB and then immediately the snow has come and he has had to live out 24/7 as too icy:(:(. Trying to hold off but he got really hot today at his jumping clinic. I'm thinking that if I don't clip then there will be no snow!

My mare doesn't get much of a winter coat at all but as others have said I prefer it as a lot less hassle to add another rug than to clip her!

My old Welsh D just didn't get a winter coat at all, he was like velvet and really felt the the cold.
Markie, on the other hand, resembled a yak by mid september and will be having his second clip in the next week.
