Does anyone feed joint supplements as a precautionary measure?

My boy has been on cortaflex for 4 or 5 years now, I started using it just because he doesn't have the best conformation and thought it might help as he got older. He is now 14 and moves a lot better than he did when he was younger. I'm not sure if it was the cortaflex that helped or just the fact that he (finally) matured a little when he was about 9. I like to think it was a bit of both!

I started to, but then ran out of money and that was one of the first casualties..... keep thinking that I should re start them, but the cider apple vinegar seems to be doing the trick at the moment

I do and have done for years. I use the equimins joint supplement at the moment, it costs me about £20 a tub and lasts about 5 weeks or so and has MSM, glucosamine and chrondronitin (sp?) in it.

I've always had bad luck with horses going lame so I am ultra paranoid about legs and joints. For me the cost of feeding it is worth the peace of mind knowing that I am helping set myself up with the healthiest joints possible as my horse gets older.

I have actually been giving this thought.

Lance is displaying a lot of arthritic symptoms now, and although Beua is only 6, he is such a big horse that Ive been thinking that preention may be better than cure, especially as I have no intention of ever selling him.

I use superflex on my 11 yo DWB as he is a big boy and I think he takes a long time to warm up and it can't hurt can it. Mind you, at nearly £30 a bottle it isn't cheap.

I use Superflex on the recommendation of my vet, who explained that joint supplements make a much better job of maintaining healthy joints than repairing worn out and damaged ones! My horse is 15 and has been on it for about 2 years.

I have my boy on cortaflex, been on it since last yr,he is only 12 so yes i am a big believer in prevention is better than a cure!mite be expensive but worth it if it gives me many many more years of riding fun with him!!!x

I used to feed my Show jumper Super solvitax RA to , he never showed any stiffness before I started using it, I just thought it would be good to use something to help him stay supple for when he was jumping the bigger tracks. (1.25m)

Farriers formula for his state of feet

In winter he gets glocosomine as he gets soooooo stiff

the only feeding for the sake of it is really Garlic !!!

I use Cortaflex on my 16 yr old TB. Its expensive but I think its worth it. He events and seems as fit as a fiddle. Not sure if its down to the Cortaflex tho but hes never had a problem so I hope so.

I started to feed Superflex to my endurance Arab when he was 5 - he's now 8. It seemed sensible to try to prevent joint damage rather than repair it. I didn't think of it with my older horse and he's now 17 with navicular and mild arthritis - I don't know whether a joint supplement would have helped defer the onset of either condition but I'm determined to be more proactive with the youngster.
