Does anyone have a cob that works "on the bit"

I was wondering if anyone has a cob that works correctly.
I have a 4yo cob, that Ive just broken in this year. And I would like it if I could do dressage with him. But I cant think of any cob that Ive seen work correctly, on the bit.

Does anyone have any pics? And does anyone compete at dressage with theirs?
 
Mine does! No pics though sorry, hoping to head out to do some dressage on her next summer. A friend will compete her this winter.

There is a lovely cob on here, Smartie who does very well. I think the users name is HunTheBun, do a search and you will find vids and pics.

Lots of users will be along shortly to prove that their cobs are amazing!
 
Of course they can and do!

Unless absolute dire conformation or obese to the point they can't flex their neck...any horse can work on the bit with correct schooling. Lift their front end and engage the back and get them to soften, like any other horse, and of course they can school correctly.

I believe that Shils should be alerted to the presence of this outrageous thread.

Cobs...on the bit????? They should be off pulling carts somewhere - surely?
 
My friend Pam, had a lovely black cob called Bentley. She worked tirelessly to teach him not to tear through arena fences, trample anything in his way and generally behave in an unmannerly way. She competed in the South East, accompanied by her elderly mother with mouthwatering picnic. She did consistently well with him and he was an absolute credit to her.
 
My mare has been placed in every dressage test, ODE or show class we have ever been in. Winning many of them.

Thank you for the link to that book, dominobrown... it would be good to get some cob specific tips to help with my boy's schooling.

Welsh again..she's never place less than 5th in any dressage comp, and any 5th's were when I'd made a mistake.

The trad stallion had in to break last year...he did a couple of Novice and Intro tests, coming 5th both times. He'd been ridden about 4 months and was a 4 year old in these pics. I wouldn't have wanted him anymore in a frame than he worked at in these at that time as he was still very much a green baby. These weren't his competing pics, but at his breeders open day.

Don't worry, Shy is 5 now, and he's just about getting it ;). No rush for us, and we do ride bitless quite a bit too (teething issues started us off), but he is going beautifully in his snaffle too.
 
My three year old coblet (currently on loan/lwvtb), he naturally carries himself like this:

Hes only young though so never forced an outline or made him do any hard work! We dont have a school on the yard so these are just playing in the field :).
 
There's some gorgeous cobs there :) mine does too but I don't have any way of putting pics up from my phone.

It's definitely possible and the feeling of power coming through from a cobs rear end is amazing. Your boy looks lovely and I'm sure he'll do you proud. :)
 
I have two! Both working elementary at home. One has taken 8 months of hard graft to get to this point and the other is a complete natural and has done it in two. Both show at county level. Cobs take in my experience twice as long to produce ESP if they are built compact and short, but it can be done and is v rewarding when you do it!
 
Mine can. This is the best picture i have, excuse the bareback, he goes better when I have a saddle etc! But dont have a picture of that.

Know he looks nice and sane in this picture, do not be fooled! Hes being a complete and utter knobber atm! :rolleyes:

I dont see why you would think that cobs cant work on the bit. My friend has a welshie that works advanced medium dressage. This is my 3 yr old coblet, as hes still a baby he doesn't work correctly all the time but he pretty much gets it when I ask for it

Agree with natalia (as can't quote on phone). Cobs can be quite slow maturing, and if they are hw type, their conformation will restrictive compared to something lighter in build
 
This years homework, naturally carries herself but now strong enough. Don't rush yours build and strengthen so you get a proper outline and not a tuck head in and not engage.
 
Yes! My cob works in a beautiful outline with my experienced friend (bit hit and miss with me). She is an experienced dressage rider and actually says my boy has the most beautiful trot in an outline she has ever ridden!!!

Shame i cant seem to get it, practice makes perfect tho!!
