Does anyone have a horse that flaps it lips??

I am sitting here in the study, and all I can hear is the old mare very loudly, flapping her lips together! She does not do this on a regular basis - she is stabled at home and is turned out all day until dark. Shows no signs of distress or any stable vices. I have had her for 19 years and I know she has been doing this from time to time.

I am not looking for a 'cure' but just wondered if any of the HHO's hosses do this??

Don't know quite what you mean, Doris? My girl wobbles her bottom lip- I always think she is trying to talk!

Yes, one of my friends had a horse that did this. Just sorta slapped his lips together. He used to do if for maybe 10 mins at a time - not every day, and just when he was bored. It was really funny to watch!

Yes - my Mum's horse does it sometimes. Not sure the reason - sometimes when he is over-excited on a hack. He doesn't do it often though

Yep. . mine does it with her bottom lip most of the time she's ridden including competitions and xc! But I haven't really noticed her doing it at other times.

Yep my old man- hes 22 now and has all ways flapped his lips, known him all his life- well mum has, hes the same age as me!! he just bangs them together with out moving his head... its very funny he mainly does it when out competiting or hunting!!
He also bites his tounge and sort of sucks on it untill it goes blue when you give him a sweet!! strange old man he he

My first pony was a palomino welsh sec A, he could spend hours sucking his tongue and flapping his lips. He did resemble an orangutan at times and made quite a lot of slurpy noises!

No, Laceyhiggs, she's an ID x TB (breeding unknown as always with a horse from Ireland!!!).

Milliepops - Yeah, that's just it - lip flopping - maybe it's boredom - who knows.

Thanks guys - it's really interesting to know that she's not alone in this bizarre (and very noisy) habit.

Hannahbanana - I doubt my old girl is active enough to do all this hunting stuff now, but she only does it when she is in her stable. It is not a regular thing - in fact, I can't remember the last time she did it BUT, when she does, I can hear her from the bedroom - it is 'all around sound'.....luverrrly...NOT!

I used to work on a P2P yard where a couple of the younger horses would spend hours with their heads over their doors, throwing their noses up and down and slapping their lips together, is that a common thing in racing yards then?
They had no weavers or cribbers, just lip smackers!

Yes, our 18 year old Welsh D x Arab mare flaps her lower lip a lot when ridden. She wears an eggbutt Neue Schule lozenge snaffle and cavesson noseband, same in an ordinary french link, and it makes no difference how fast she is going, or expects to go, or the degree of contact. Never noticed her doing it when untacked though!

yes, one of my 4 yr olds worked out how to do this the other day. she's only done it in the field so far, apparently to amuse herself! first one i've ever had who does it!

She was imported by Paul McAteer many years ago and was (supposedly) home bred by his mother.....any comments (even if PM'd) greatly appreciated!!

i have a rescue trotter that does it when she is nervous whe she is being ridden i have had her for5 years and she has always done itwhen we first got her it was worse and she used to do it all the time but she only does her bottem lip and she makes a sort of mummummumumum noise it is rather strange but funny!!!!

my welsh d mare does it! has a wobbly lip when ridden all the time, and also when not, she shakes her head up and down to wobble her lips!! mad!!

our pony always did this at shows and we thought it was really cute. As soon as we retired him he stopped and never did it again.
He was the most laid back pony and always came home placed so why he did it when he was competeing I don't know. Maybe it was his way of showing stress but we always thought he lived to event and felt really guilty when he became a happy hack!

Yip, my TB ex-racer mare does it. She's got turnout and stable toys so not sure why she does it.

Daughter's pony does bottom lip when being ridden (snaffle and cavesson) and looks like she's chunnering to herself. Deosn't do it otherwise (ie at rest in stable)

We had a pony rotated her nose/lip when ridden, as though she had something stuck to her top teeth. Again only when ridden.

Tara did it when being ridden, really loudly too- the wetter her mouth, the more she did it!

Yep! Tara does it.

Mostly when being hacked alone, have never seen her do it any other time - I think it's nerves but she's always very calm and sensible so I just ignore it

She also sticks her tongue out so trainer thinks I should use a flash.
