Hello everyone I am not sure about what is going on ATM so don't want to go into to many details but wanted to know if anyone has a thoroughbred who lives out all year and how they cope?
About 8 TBs on our yard and they and all other horses except two arabs live out all year. Fit clipped and competing from field too. Several are ex racehorses.
Yep! Ours is 29 and is out 24/7 365 days a year. We 'saved' him 10years ago as his owner had nowhere for him to go after several failed loans. He does fine out and in fact, although he likes his field shelter he doesn't do being shut in a stable (he likes to come in for a roll on the straw everyso often but is not keen on being shut in. Due to his age he does require more feed these days but can still eat hay. We rug him when it's cold/and or wet and he is happy. Yes, we'd like him to be a bit fatter but he's never carried loads of weight anyway an he's more chilled being out
Thank you guys amazing positive response! I think this is going to be the outcome for dizzy. It looks like she is going to be off work for longer than I thought and her being stabled from 4pm-8am isn't suiting either of us especially when my yard has the option of a 10acre field shared with two others with natural shelter. No brainier I think I was just worried about winter but I know she has done a winter out before
TBs are very hardy I think and they tend to grow a very thick winter coat. If you see TB mares and foals they are generally left out in all weathers from the word go. People tend to think they can't/won't cope though but it works very well for the majority
Yes pretty much every tb stud will leave them out all year, rugging accordingly although most of them don't need rugs providing there's good shelter and enough food
Yup had 2 TB liveries who lived out perfectly happily . AD LIB forage is the key, and they dont need WELL RUGGING at all, such a marketing fallacy, they just need the change to grow a blinking coat !
Thank you everyone again! You have out things in a much more positive light for me. Neither me or dizzy are happy with our current situation so this is another thing for us to try as I love this yard and utilising their grass livery will be the next plan for us I think.
KVH I have replied
I have the wimpiest most disaster prone tb and due to circumstances i had to winter him out in a pure boggy field full of ditches. I have visions of mud fever, bad hooves and him injuring himself or losing weight. but he loved it and coped really well. I keep him out all year round now
I had my old tbx Wb out all year, and have my current tb too. Mine is well rugged but he is fully clipped so needs it! We don't even have a field shelter, just a natural wind break along one field edge and a nice sloping field. He is much better out, not so sharp an his pssm means he's stiff if he's in. Agree with the adlib forage though, if they're digesting then they'll stay warm!! Mud fever is my biggest problem, but field chaps help and we are well practiced at managing it now!!
Mine has wintered out and was happier for it. He currently has to come in at night with my others as my current fields are too small and wet to cope with them out 24/7. At work however we have several TB's who live out all year and a few don't even get rugged.
Barry lived out 24/7 at the yard I got him from. We have 24/7 "summer" turnout at my yard but when I asked when that finishes I was told the yard owner tries to keep us on 24/7 til boxing day. He'll be staying out for as long as poss (rugged). He much prefers it.
