Hi, im looking to buy a 4 star equi trek trailer which is about 12 years old. Does anyone have one or have experience of using/owning one?
Ive been told its in good condition but its a very long way away so I am a bit worried about any problems they may have like rotting etc.

Hi yes I've had one for a few years now - I traded in my Ifor Williams 511 for it as I was having real problems with that one.

The horses love it, they travel much better in it than they have in anything else & I like the fact they don't get wet backs/bums when it's raining. It's really easy to tow and the tack room area is worth it's weight in gold.

However it's not particularly well built, only minor things, but in the early days I had tie up points & door handles replaced and one of the nuts sheared off where the side ramp is attached and jammed the door up. All these were sorted out quickly & easily by my trailer centre but it's things that really shouldn't have happened in a new trailer.

The saddle rack has also broken but that was my fault for putting 4 saddles on 2 racks, and when I ordered a new one through EquiTrek their service was great.

One thing to consider though is the inconvenience a side load sometimes causes. I didn't give it much thought before I bought it but it can be an issue when loading or unloading in certain areas, especially narrowish lanes - if that's ever a situation you find yourself in! I always leave the ramp down when I'm at an event so people don't park too close to me, but often find they give me space on the loading side but not on the other side which is where the horses tie up. At events you really need a lot of space either side as the horses tie on the passenger side & the ramp comes down on the drivers side. More than once I've had to move when people have parked next to me without leaving enough space and it can be very frustrating.

It also gets dirty very quickly so needs a regular hosing with the pressure wash, and I do find the ramp quite slippery - much moreso than the Ifor Williams although the horses seem fine on it.

Other than that I love it - if there was something very similar but a better build quality I'd buy that but I don't think there is.

Thanks very much. I love the idea of having one so hubby and my little girl have somewhere comfortable to sit especially if the weathers a bit iffy. Im just concerned that a 12yr old one is going to have some major issues im not aware of. Id be very happy with a 12yr old ifor williams trailer as they are so well built and simple, but these are all new to me! :)

I'm not sure how well they age especially as I've heard the older ones were even worse quality than the ones they've built in the last few years.

I guess in terms of chassis/structure it will be fine but maybe there will be issues with some of the non major parts - which can all be replaced. I wouldn't think it would have rotted anywhere because there's no wood.

Could you contact a trailer centre close to where it is and pay for them to have a look over it?
