Does anyone have an honesty box for eggs?

I don't have a stamp..............

My eggs come from Scramble, Omlette (recently deceased bless her), Korma, Dotty and Jalfresi.

Stop laughing !! We did have Spotty and Pottie, they were Dottie's sisters.

Korma went broody 2 weeks ago, that's sweet I thought, and made her comfy with fresh shavings and her own drinker plus her favourite treat of a bit of cucumber.

About 48 hours after she put herself away, and after I had told several of my friends we would be having a few chicks, I had a bit of a 'lightbulb' moment and realised we gave the rooster away and poor old Korma would be sitting tight forever ..............stop laughing !!! I legged it down the lane and got a handful of good eggs from my friend, who is still laughing his socks off, and put them under Korma who is still sitting on them.

Needless to say, several friends have asked if I attended biology lessons at school.

My neighbour has an honesty box and has had to set up CCTV to monitor it as he was fed up with people taking eggs and not leaving the money.

A local lad bags up our horse manure and sells it at the bottom of his garden for 50p a bag. He has had his money box broken into and the contents stolen.

All this in a rural community that is supposed to be a nice area!

I'd give it a go if i was you, but empty your money box regularly and padlock it to something.

our local 'carrot lady' (where we buy nets of carrots for the horses) uses a letterbox for the money. It is locked and is bolted onto the gate, so I doubt she has trouble with thieves.

TBH with the honesty box side of it, it'd just be nice to get a contribution, I guess I wouldn't care too much if people took them and didn't pay - the chickens barely cost anything and it's more to get rid of the waste than anything. Maybe I should call it a hen contribution box :D

Some friends of mine had surplus veggies last year so set up a table outside their place with an array of vegetables. A sign said,
Vegetables - all organic, please help yourself.
Contributions to Air Ambulance.

A box was on the table.

They arrived home to find all the veggies and the box with £5 in it - the only thing missing was the table!

We have had an honesty box for about three year now, we are very rural and have a plastic box with sign saying

"Eggs For Sale From Our 50 Ex Battery Now Happy Free Range Hens, All Money Raised Goes To Educating Children in The Gambia"

We raise about £1,000 a year and this is used to send two Gambian children, a brother and sister to the only Montessori School in The Gambia, the rest of their family are illiterate so we really hope to make a difference to the whole family's
future. We have a file with photographs of the children, their school reports, exam results etc. it has really taken off and we have some customers driving to us from other areas to purchase the eggs and we regularly get more money than eggs taken. Only once was the box taken, about two years ago, it would have had about £5 in, I was so upset I straightaway put up a big sign saying

"to the thieving bast**ds who stole the £5 charity money, shame on you, but the children will not lose out and I will be donating the £5 myself".

That day I received more than £25 in donations from locals who were also really upset, lovely people!

thats really nice to do it to support charities.
i think i am going to have to bite the bullet and go for selling mine as i cant give them away as i have too many (friends and family already have been given a load yet i still have a surplus!)

I just need to buy a supply of egg boxes :-)
I think i'm going to go with the - 'please knock at the door' option initially or, i had thought about putting it on some local facebook groups as i know of another local lady who i have seen do that.

If the point of the exercise is to get rid of surplus eggs that would otherwise go to waste, surely any donations you do get is just a bonus? At least if they take them and don't pay, you still get rid of them ;) I've bought eggs, veg and jam from houses with honesty boxes - and yes, I always pay! Saw some lovely jams when we were riding the horses but had no way of carrying it home!

I would rather have an honesty box and risk people taking stuff without paying than have the hassle of them knocking the door and disturbing the dogs.

Agree completely in my case, but if other people want/need money from theirs, that's fair too :)

I couldn't stand people knocking all the time, I hate unwanted visitors - I'm too often in my smalls! :D

not sure if this ha been suggested: you can freeze eggs, just semi whip them like you would for scrambled eggs and put them in ice cube trays. I also sell all my surplus eggs to work colleagues

You can also feed surplus eggs back to the chickens. Boil them. Mash them, mix with poultry spice, cod liver oil and a little mixed corn and watch them get their beaks filthy :D :D :D

I buy eggs every week and use the honesty box which in this case is just a shelf! I love the freedom of being able to buy whenever I need to and haven't bought a supermarket egg in years. :)

My neighbour does. We live down a slightly secluded dirt track, so the only people who know the box is there are people she has told, so she has a trusted client base that includes us :D. It's lovely to be able to nip along and get eggs as and when we need them, as well as to see exactly how the hens are kept (they live like royalty!!).
