Does anyone have Gueese as guards...? ? ? ?

We now have 6 acres of land of which our horses live.

We are not there 24/7, although do have plenty of neighbours.....
does anyone know how well the large white gueese guard / raise alarm on intruders and how many you would need (I do not know the breed name!)? ?

useless - myth - I have geese and live on my yard - they sound off at all hours and my cockerels can crow at 2am

and when we did have an intruder the geese didn't deter them - neither did the dogs - but the monitored alarm did
 
haha yes, i do now! someone dumped 3 big fat white ones about a mile down the road last week, i went down and herded them home, so they're mine now! (they stood all day on the same bit of grass by the lane, totally bewildered, miles from anywhere... definitely dumped, poor things.)
i think they're a better detterent that anything else, people are naturally wary of them. they make a fearful racket though, whenever they fancy. i think they'd always raise the alarm, but you might not believe it because they do it so much anyway!
my current theory is that they see ghosts, because they'll all suddenly start honking and shrieking at absolutely nothing at all, and then all quieten down again. very strange.
they freak the youngsters out a little bit to begin with!
 
Agreed with reynold, there are geese on the "secure storage yard" next to my field and they are so flipping noisy, but I doubt very much that a few large lumps of feathers would deter thieves as much as a good alarm would. Plus you don't need to pick up mess or feed an alarm, and you can't just stick batteries in an goose (or attach it to the mains, although I expect that would be an interesting experiment...)
 
My neighbour had some and they kept getting into our fields!!! We couldnt get near the horses for the blooming geese!!!

In fact if they were in the field we just didnt go in!!!

Ooh I just suggested this to someone else a moment ago. I've never had geese, but my neighbour had them and boy did they make a dreadful hooting noise if anything was untoward!

They also used to run around and attack any strangers on the yard. I never liked the blooming things but then they used to attack me as I didn't know them very well.

Afriend of mine was a livery on a yard where gueese were kept loose.
One day one of them jumped her from behind whilst she was grooming her horse.

She fell to the ground and the goose jumped on her flapping its wings.
She broke her wrist as she fell

I know-it sounds funny doesent it

Had geese a couple of years back and they would go for your ankles, it didn't matter who it was. We ended up having to defend ourselves with a lunging whip!
 
Well I think thats made my mind up, don't think we'll bother! ! Some of them stories did make me giggle though, sorry!

We have three next door - very effective - make a racket at strangers but like me as I give them bits of carrot. To be honest, wouldn't stop a determined thief but might put off a casual wandering type.
