does anyone bring there horses in at night all year round??

i have never done this, but i kno some people do.... abby get cold very easily and majority of the time is out through the day with 2 rugs on still, i'm nervous of how she will cope bein out 24/7 in scotland lol!!! if u do do u not get sick of the mucking out???

yes my boy is in every night all year round
yard doesnt allow 24/7 turnout, but i would keep him in regarless of that, as he cannot be trusted in the field for long periods

Mine comes in during the day in summer as she burns. In at night in the winter. Out 24/7 for about a week each year if she is lucky!!!

he he lol!!!
i get the feelin i would be considered a woose if i kept abby in all year but am seriously considering it. i would hav to find a new yard tho, an i dont kno any yards that hav horses in all year. thats another reason i want to rent a wee yard to myself, so i can do things like that

My horses are in by night all year round! I like to think they are tucked up with a big haynet and I can pop round the yard to check on them before I go to bed. I don't think about the mucking out I just do it and at least with the lighter nights they do stay out until 7.30pm so their stables are not so bad in the mornings as they have been in them for less hours. If it is really hot during the day they have trees to stand under.

Yes my girl and all other horses on yard are in every night. Having said that day time grazing is not restricted in winter so I really don't mind.

In theory in at night in winter, in during the day in summer (yard rules). BUT, last summer was so awful, we switched them round to in during the day which lasted about a month or so before we put them back to being in at night, not least because the supposedly hardy NF pony caught a chill whilst out with his rainsheet on!

she will be fine-horses are meant to be outdoor creatures, I think it is unfair unless she needs restricted grazing to have her in in the summer.

Yes mine are in at night all year round. I have my own fields so can do as i please and i use them all year round. If i left them out 24/7 they be bloaters!!! Only keep them in for dietry reasons. My old pony was out 24/7 in summer but we had no winter turnout.

I would love them to be out all the time but they would become ill and the risk of laminitis is too much. Dont find the mucking out hard it takes 5 mins to do two, they are abit like mucking out a hamster cage!!! LOL!!!

Unless Abby is particularly thin-skinned, she should be fine. I'm in Peeblesshire too, and my 2 Arabs have lived out 24/7 for the past 3 years. So long as they have adequate shelter, good rugs and good feeding, most horses are the better for being outside - they're less at risk of developing stable vices or respiratory ailments, and they can socialise to their hearts' content!

The Borders have had less extreme weather this winter than most of the rest of the UK - little flooding, hardly any lasting snow. The worst thing she'll have to contend with is likely to be midges ...

i sooo wish i was lucky enough to have a couple of stables of my own....... be so much easier, if i decided to keep her in all yr round (hav just emailed her owner down south too to get her opinion) i would hav to move yards cause there only 3 horses incl abby and the other 2 go out 24/7 in summer and i wouldn't want her in by herself all night. but i really don't kno any yard which hav all year round stabling here.

she really suffers wi the cold, and feels it easily. i personally would prefer her to be out, hoping her owner will say the same. would be nice to hav the option tho aswell if you kno what i mean.

Feel a bit of a rant coming on here. Why oh why do people always assume all horses want to live out 24/7 or even all summer?
If you attempted to have any one of my lot out for more than a couple of hours (& that is in superb conditions, not too hot, & not too cold) They would jump out of any field & make their own way back to a stable. It is ridiculous to try & say that every horse is the same. Whilst I accept that many horses that have never known any thing other than long periods in the field, MANY, given the choice are absolutely not interested. I always ensure that all mine get regular periods grazing however if you put any of them out in December or August they would be completely distressed. Not trying to cause an argument but it is about time we stopped insisting that out at grass for long periods is sound advice for every horse.
Feel better now.

yes but she will be perfectly fine out at night in the summer. I have to say it irritates me when people treat their horses like humans.
I own the worlds most pathetic horse, and sister has no. 2, they shiver when cold and make it fairly obvious, both part tb (mine is 3/4) and not good doers. Both out 24/7 summer no rugs.

In winter they come in at night but that is because they are TB. In the summer they come in the day bu that depends on the weather ( if its too hot) and if the flies are bad. They generally keep there wait at a norman constant in the summer, they tend to look a bit skinny in the winter if they're left to their left out too long, or not wrapped up enough. But if you have a cob or another hardy breed, as long as you check on them and feed them, what's the problem with letting them live out. I definately think that they prefer it. In the summer, when mine are out, they are so happy, to be fair though in the winter they are garteful to come in xx

Freshman...that would worry me it has to be said if all my horses were like that, would lead me to think my management needed adjusted.

Mine are happy to come in-when its feedtime. But say we move feedtime etc. they are more than happy to stay out (having come down to the gate for feed-conditioned response there!)

well what i'm sayin is that i hav NEVER in my life had a horse in through summer, but abby is from the south of england and might of been kept in through the summer before so if that is whats she's had for the past 15yrs i will keep it that way to make her happy. if she is allowed to be kept out she will be, she came up from a totally different environment so i have to take all things into consideration especially since she is on loan to me

i'm used to natives, so a TB is different for me lol

I doubt it will keep her happy-and previous management (unless she gets bothered by flies etc) shouldn't really have a bearing.
Honestly-she will be fine! Obviously wean her off her rugs gradually.

Why would any management need adjusting. If a horse is happier to be kept in the warmth in cold/wet weather, or cool & away from flies/midges in the hot weather. From my prospective the animal is voting with it's feet if it jumps any fence to get where it wants to be. Furthermore any horse that is bitten to death with flies/midges simply stands around stamping feet on hard ground. How is that beneficial to it's well being? It is not rational to claim every horse is the same. Not every one has native breeds.

I don't have native breeds either freshman. Most normal horses are happy to stay in the field,I don't actually know any that dont (and yes, ours are competition animals). So I stand by what I said.
Sallypops-of course you should..but why not try her living out?

because the desicion lies with her owner, i have said she would be rugged etc when needed, but if she has lived in all year round all her life and thats the way she likes it why change that???

Interesting!
Mine are in at night all year round unless its really hot when they are then in during the day in the summer.

One of mine would happily stay out all the time, however the other one (my mw mare) stands at the gate after about 5 hrs out and would much rather come in. Intrestingly this mare was out running with a herd 24/7 until the age of 6 when I bought her and broke her in. She has known what it is like to be hungry and cold and now much prefers the softer life.

Last year I decided to leave them out 24/7 for a week whilst I went on holiday as it was easier for my friend to look after them that way. I would not do it again as the mare was not at all happy staying out even though she had plenty of grass and I built up the time staying out gradually the week before I left.
