Does anyone here have a Manchester Terrier?

I met the most gorgeous Manchester Terriers today. They looked like the perfect dog for our next one - still basically a terrier, will rat, but a bit bigger and hopefully therefore with more stamina to come hacking. One of them had the patience of an actual saint while lots of people stroked him.

Anyway… what are they like in ‘real life’ as it were? We’re used to terriers, and I have had a cocker spaniel (that was on the maybe list for our next dog). Not in any hurry to get a new one but this was the first time I had that spark of ‘I’d like another’ since our much adored JRT died of old age last autumn. She was epic - came hacking with us for hours, hopped on the saddle when she got tired/on the roads/when we met other dogs.

I do!! And about to have several more hopefully in the next few days 🙈😱
@druid and @ihatework also I’m sure won’t mind me saying that they are owned by MTs.

They are amazing dogs. Great size, clean, loyal, athletic, intelligent, beautiful. With proper socialisation and training they have v good recalls and social skills - they are terriers through and through though.

They are also classed as a vulnerable breed with decreasing numbers sadly. No idea why!

They're not for everyone!

Temperaments are pretty crap in some bloodlines (nervy, dog aggressive in the usual terrier way). Mine are so laid back they are practically horizontal but that's not the norm for the breed ;)

They make fantastic loyal pets if you put some work in to socialising and training and they love dog sports as much as they love their sofa!

Do check health tests have been done - there are 3 genetic diseases to be tested for and unfortunately some breeders aren't testing for all 3.

Whereas I have a…

Patterdale!

I had one but he was a nutter! Grumpy with other dogs terrorised a puppy which got me into trouble! He died with kidney failure aged 11. Very handsome and a good dog indoors even though our Jack Russell didn’t think so!

I have one, in my not at all biased opinion they are the best! Most definitely my breed!
Possibly not for everyone.

Very handsome, super loyal, easy in the house - loves snuggles. A little guardy/barky.

Very sociable with other dogs in general, but does just have a slightly nervous streak with bigger males, easy to manage just need to be aware. Adores a rough game of chase.

He’s super intelligent and on the whole very trainable, but equally has a strong terrier drive so will hunt and chase, just need to be one step ahead of him.

And just because ..

Resurrecting this thread as I'll be graduating from uni next year and will finally be in the place to have my own dog. I've had Whippets, a JRT and a Parsons Russel and have admired the Manchesters for ages as they're the perfect mix of whippet size and then terrier brain, wrapped up in a mini Dobermann coat (which I also adore but would probably be too big). The plan would be for potential dog to be mostly a family pet, with some ratting and yard dog duties at our stables, and then also potentially to do some agility too. If anyone has any reputable breeder contacts who may have a litter coming in the next year or so, I'd be extremely interested as so far my searching has been futile. Wanting to register interest early as I know they're a rare breed and litters that aren't already reserved far in advance are probably very uncommon.
Thank you all

Also wishing you luck! We need to wait until we move house (this one should go in the market in the spring) but I’m fairly set on this as a breed.

That’s pretty much my dogs life!
The only thing I can’t do at the moment is have him loose & unsupervised on the yard, he is prone to buggering off hunting! So he stays attached to a longline when I can’t pay 100% attention to the little begger.

Might be worth seeing if @druid is planning another litter

I know small breeds can be susceptible to teeth problems and that tooth care is important. Breeds can vary in regards to dental health, how are Manchesters generally in this regard?
