Read Jilly Cooper's 'The Common Years' a sort of diary about her daily walks across the common with her English Setter. Enough scrapes and mishaps to get a book out of it!
We had one at home when I was a teenager. Could not be let off the lead, as he just disappeared, an absolute ball of energy, over friendly, would chew anything and everything, and thought the world was his playground. Lovely, affectionate dog, but had a hereditary digestive issue, and could not digest fats. He had to have a trypsin supplement all his life, given daily with food. As others have said, not a dog for the faint hearted.
I have two rescue setter x spaniel, they are like smaller setters.
Both have rediclously high prey drive, but the best temperament.
Adore a lot of exercise but happy to curl up on the sofa the rest of the day
