Made me sick reading it. I know its the tip of the iceberg but its just awful. If they were closer I would have helped one.

That's how all our council pounds over here are, but some are more proactive than others, a few of the dog wardens go into local schools and try and speak to kids about responsible dog ownership, give out neutering vouchers etc, one advertises on Dumbtree to try and get it into people's heads to rehome THEIR rescue pups rather than spend ££££ funding puppy farmers.

They're not all callous gits and they don't 'enjoy' having to put healthy dogs down. We all, every one of us, have a responsibility to help this kind of thing stop, it's not the fault of the guys who have to administer the needle because someone bred it without thinking, because the parents were 'lovely' or they needed a bit of cash/chucked it out when they could no longer be bothered with it :(
But it's easier for LJ to have a bogeyman figure to hate.

Oh yes I absolutely agree, these poor people are left to mop up the aftermath of indiscriminatory breeding. I really do think that back street breeders are to blame or those that just see a litter of pups as £££££££££.

I think the other thing that needs to change is the ridiculously high number of people rejected from adopting dogs for silly reasons ie working so won't be in the home for hours. How many people have dogs and work, probably all of us. At least working shows we can provide financially for the dogs.

The other problem seems to be the number of people who think dogs are disposable and give them up for silly reasons. Hell would freeze over before I ever gave my dog away.

The article also says rented accommodation is a problem where landlords won't allow people to take dogs so anyone moving into rented housing has to chuck the dog out.

Its all very sad and as usual its the dogs who suffer.

I totally agree about overly strict rehoming policies. I could probably sit at home all day and not work but a) I need to pay vet's bills and b) I like taking holidays.

I know there's a big problem but a number of these dogs will have gone to rescues, especially as they were mainly non staffies. I think these were on the Rochdale Dog Rescue
site, though they'll have new dogs on there now.

it was certainly one of the northern ones.

The blind (actually now believed to have peripheral vision) is now with Rescue Remedies in Surrey and is in foster with some very caring people. Olive is now called Deirdre and here is her link. She's now in ther reserved section. I'd guess her fosterers are keeping her.

Lovely pictures of her
