One of my youngsters is by him, I bought her as a yearling to run with my other yearling. I've found some stuff online about him (stud page etc), but as I'm going to back this filly this year, I'd like to know if they have a reputation for anything in particular! She's a very sweet and easy filly, not at all sharp... so far...

Thanks in advance, if anyone knows anything!

I can tell you anything you want to know about him - almost his shoe size! He stands not far from us and I've had 3 by him out of 2 different mares.

Which type is yours - he either throws big middleweight chestnuts or daintier bays. The good news is that both are usually very well put together and extremely successful showing. The bad - they have a tendency to have attitudes! I understand that Ace was only broken to saddle as a youngster (think I might have some old video of him under saddle somewhere) and then no longer ridden as he wasn't keen to play ball.

There are many, many horses by Ace in Scotland and very few prove themselves outside the showring, with a few exceptions. They have dominated in hand showing for many years (we won everything with ours out of totally different mares) but they were quirky when asked to knuckle down under saddle. However, they were all easy to back!

Let me know if there's anything else you want to know and would love to see some photos of your youngster by him.

Except how he came to exist in the first place, which I can :-).

friend of mine (once married to William Funnell's father John but that is by the way :-)) had a beautiful BWBS-graded TB grey mare by Mansingh called Mandara whom she had regularly bred to Atlantus. However, she decided to go and work in the US for a year so asked me if I could find someone who would lease Mandarah as a broodmare for the the time she was away. Morwenna Crossley was interested in her and as she lived in Wales (still does and still breeds some good quality horses I believe) she sent her to Mrs Kirby's Hannoverian stallion Akkord as the mare's foals did tend to be a bit flighty and he had a super temperament.

The result was Stonegrive Ace, whom Mo sold to Doreen Allsion (then Wilson) as a stallion prospect to stand in Scotland (this was before she bought Accondy of course). I once organised a stallion parade at Addington and managed to get Akkord, Crown Marquasite (the other famous Akkord stallion son) and Stonegrove Ace to line up for a photograph togetehr. Quitye a shot I can tell you, but sadly I do not have a copy as this was long before digital images.

How interesting! Doreen asked us to parade our mare and foal with Ace at a BWBS grading/stallion demo at Stoneleigh in about '93 - don't suppose that was the one as I'm sure Akkord was there?

haha measles, she's the daintier bay type, how interesting! she's out of a bay race/event mare though, so i didn't think anything of her daintyness till you said that!
glad to know she'll prob be easy to back, from then on, it's all down to me i reckon, as long as she's brave enough to jump a ditch and get her feet wet!

she's a total sweetie, actually. came to me very wild, more like having a deer around than a horse, but i can say that even when she panicked early on and got me in the corner of the stable as she span and tried to run away, she never even thought of kicking, bless her! (my Fleetwater Opposition filly, otoh, would knock my teeth out given 1/2 a chance...)
will take some pics and put them up. thankyou!

We are only a few miles away from where he stands too, and my MIL has bred several horses from him over the years.

Measles is spot on about most of their traits, including the quirkyness! They have fab temperaments but can be a bit odd - 2 brothers my MIL bred would rather lie down on the ramp than walk into a lorry!
Both were bays around 16.2, and both have done well showing. One of these is pictured below....

Oh, I did laugh when I read this bit of your post. I wish you the very best of luck, but.....!

That said someone again local to us has one eventing very successfully BE Nov/Int so some of them must go through water.... He, he!

oh dear measles, is the getting feet wet part likely to be dramatic then? she's living in a bit of a bog at the moment, so no chance of being a princess here, just hope she'll remember it when i'm aboard... Aerodynamic's advanced and by him, isn't he? so that's at least one who's brave...!

I've got an Accondy out of a Stonegrove Ace mare. He is the absolute spit of Stonegrove Ace though! Is of the large ginger variety but is still pretty lightweight. Is an amazing mover though! Took him ages to grow up and was still growing at 7!

In my experience they tend to be pretty quirky and have lots of attitude! Mine gets very stressed about the most stupid little things but is an absolute angel most of the time. Most of the one's I've dealt with have loads of presence and if they're in the mood they are fabulous!
