Hi all,

Does anyone know anything about the stallion Mahmoud Shah i believe he is standing at malthouse arabians but there website is not working and would like to know what height he is? colour? and what progeny he has? and what he has done showing wise. Any help would be appricated as i have seena foal by him and would like more information on him before going to look at the foal.

Many thanks

He's a straight Egyptian - was leading sire at the 2008 UK Egyptian Event.

Pretty horse, but I would be a bit concerned about whether these bloodlines will give you the movement you need for breeding sport horses. What is the foal's damline? I'd be looking for a Russian and/or Polish damline.

the only thing i could find out is that he is a grey

i hope that gives you a little bit more info as i couldnt find out anything else.
i would try the Arabian horse society website www.stallionsonline.co.uk/ -

Hi,
This is his dams pedigree i think it is mostly egypian she is beautiful bay

One of her sons is a stallion mahaala standing at woodbank arabians http://www.woodbankarabians.com/mahaala.html
so he would be half brother to the foal.

Dam is basically straight Egyptian too. (She has a few Crabbet lines in her pedigree, and some horses bred by Lady Anne Blunt at her Sheyk Obeyd stud in Egypt that were later imported to Crabbet, and would be designated as Crabbet... but so do quite a lot of 'Straight Egyptians'.)

Both the sire and dam of the foal you are considering are very nice, well-bred Arabs - but as I said, I would be concerned about movement. It is very hard to find a straight Egyptian with really big movement. Not saying they don't exist - I've seen a few; Crusader was one outstanding exception to this rule, for example. But they are rare.

I had a straight egyptian and amostly egyptian, both bought because of their big movement, great long ground covering strides, excelled at endurance.

The last post about him on an Arabian forum, in 2008, said he wasn't at public stud but that may have changed so I'd phone Malthouse and find out.

I agree with Kate though - decide what it is you're looking for when you add the Arabian blood. Different strains tend to add different characteristics such as movement or type. That's not to say that you won't be able to get everything you're looking for - there are some typey Arabs who can also be great movers but in general different strains for different purposes. And again, as Kate says - for movement the Russian horses tend to produce terrific, poweful movers, swinging the leg straight from the shoulder and producing the double (or even triple) flick of the hoof when at medium/extended trot. The American bred horses tend to have a higher knee carriage, similar to the Hackney. The Crabbet bloodlines are often viewed as being the least typey but best ridden horses, and they too have lines that are famous for the double/triple flick. Spanish and Crabbet lines produce good jumpers. The Egyptian lines are very typey and have tremendous stamina and excel at endurance.

In terms of conformation, the Crabbet and Russian strains tend to have nice, short cannons and slightly more bone than other strains. The Russian strains also tend to produce slightly taller horses.

Of course, these are all generalisations but if you can summarise what it is you're looking for and what you want to do with the foal, perhaps we can help point you in the direction of the strains to look out for (not particular stallions, just the strains so that you can then have all the fun of researching the pedigrees and choosing :) ) What height are you looking for, what are you hoping for the foal, does it matter about gender?

I'm sure between us, Kate, Rowena and I can help point you in the right direction.

Good endurance lines here. If you want to put her to an arab then I would go for straight egyptian to compliment the Crabbet, and you shouldnt get a stuffy foal, be aware that a lot of OE?Crabbett?Russian can produce an almost cobby very short coupled horse which doesnt cover the ground, at least in my experience it does. A stallion like Al Sood or his son Deemonstrator would be my choice. Other than that a Spanish or spanish/egyptian stallion. Than what you should get long striding athlecticism. Personally I wouldnt put her to an Engish, Russian or Polish arab. Have you considered a different breed? TB Anglo or Trakehena(sp?). Please forgive my spelling I have mild dyslexia and struggle with it.
