Hi Ive been giving magnitude as a supplement for about a year now, initially I started giving it as our lad seemed to have excess nervous energy after very limited turnout at the yard we were at last winter. Anyhow that's all changed now but I decided to carry on giving it as I heard so many good things about magnesium. I have since had him go barefoot so was going to start giving pro hoof as a supplement to help with this and I had a look at the ingredients and it already contains magnesium, so do I stop giving magnitude as he will then be getting a double dose? I did contact progressive earth by email to ask their advise but they didn't come back to me.

I think it's 6000mg of magnesium (new improved formula now has 6g of magnesium - previously 4g) per
57g/75ml scoop.

I found this on their ebay page.

I feed forage plus hoof health balancer plus give extra magnesium. It's safe to feed in higher doses as they wee out the excess they don't need.

As far as I can see, the weight of magnesium is related to MgO magnesium oxide 1:2 , one gm of magnesium is found in 2 gms of MgO.
So to feed 6gms of Mg, one needs to feed 12gms of MgOxide.

I think this is about the minimum , but as to the max, I don't know, all I know is that Rockley Farm feed a lot of magnesium. We know all their horse are barefoot, and that clients' horses have significant feet issues.

As a rule of thumb, it seems 6gm Mg [12gm MgO] is the recommended min amount per day for most horses in the UK on a reasonable diet.

Try pro earth again, I have had good advice from them [telephone], I used Hoof Pro for remedial nutrition, most people use the balancer [winter][summer] as it is cheaper.

ok thank you all for the advise I did see that pro hoof had changed to 6g per scoop, I will need to look at the magnitude again as I can't remember how much magnesium per scoop that is. I will try to phone progressive earth instead. Thanks.

I managed to contact progressive earth and the magnesium in pro hoof means I won't have to feed the magnitude which I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure works out at 4g a day and pro hoof will be 6g.

Magnitude I think was about £18 a 900g tub, magnesium from pro earth and I expect other suppliers is a lot cheaper.
