Does anyone know of a genuine safe, sound, schooled cob for sale please?

So great that you have had so many helpful replies. I hope that after the difficult time you have had, that you are able to find your next horsey soon and have lots of fun with him/her.

I understand your fears on a dealer, mysafecobs seem to have an amazing rep and do not operate in the same way as all other dealers.

I know of a lady in Bishops Waltham, Hampshire who is very honest and sometimes has safe horses for sale...she will tell you if they are not suitable. If you want the details then PM me.

NFED is pretty good for private sales, you have to watch it 24/7 though as anything good will have phonecalls on within hours of being posted. My friend just bought a lovely 'safe cob' via a private sale on NFED. There are some honest people out there.
 
Would it be worthwhile contacting your local rda group to see where they get horses from either for themselves or clients who move on to owning/ competing etc? I'm sure they'd have contacts & local knowledge to point you in the right direction.
 
Well I've had a couple of pm's suggesting that I contact a dealer called Clip Clop Traders, so I have put aside my prejudice and just Emailed them. But if they come up with something I will be taking an experienced AI, and having a 5 stage vetting with blood tests. Nothing may come of it, but I thank everyone for their suggestions.
Just in case I do strike lucky I am posting a link which shows the type of horse I am looking for ideally. Sadly the horse advertised is too old at 21 years, but is really a smaller version of the horse I had for 20 years.

Yes please, but whilst he is the most genuine, easiest and amenable horse i've ever known, at 3 years old (he is broken and schooling like he's a ....... 7 year old!) I cannot guarantee that he won't at some stage in the future go through the teenage 'push'

So with that in mind, good luck, and I have to say.... well done with your valiant fight, you have my upmost respect, keep fighting hun. x

I presume that even if you buy through a private sale you will take the same sensible approach to taking an expert opinion and vetting.

I hope your search for a horse goes well. Please be aware of labelling all dealers as 'not caring' and all private sales as 'caring where the horse goes to'. You will find that even private sellers have something to hide from time to time, whereas a good dealer has a living to make selling horses and therefore has less to gain by jeapordising their reputation.

I've bought both my geldings through dealers. Last year, i bought a super cob through a dealer in kingston. He was for my OH and the lady dealt in a lot of cobs for the RDA. He's quiet enough for my OH and 65 y.o MIL to ride and will jump 90cm with me. When i went to try him i explained that i really wanted something uber-safe and the lady was very good to explain that she'd never 100% guarantee anything but that she hadn't yet found his weak point. He was hacked down a major A road with no bother. etc.....

Thank you again to everybody who have posted, I appreciate your help very much.
While posting could I pick your brains again:
(1) Has anyone had dealings with a horse dealer called Amy Fisher, at somewhere called Millington horses in Cheshire ? The reason for my question is that I have seen a potential horse they have advertised for sale, and they have offered to let me have it for two weeks and if it is unsuitable will refund.
I know all these things are a gamble, but Cheshire is quite a long way from me, so I would like to know if this person is known to be honest.
(2) Does anyone know of an AI or very experienced horse person in the area of Millington horses who could accompany me to look at the horse concerned (obviously on a proper fee paying basis). I really need someone who can spot things that I might not notice.

Finally, yes Dovoriun, I would be happy to consider a 16hh horse, so long as it is a cob or Irish Draught type. Actually I would actually prefer it, because the horse I owned for 22 years was a 16.3hh shire x thoroughbred, and I am slightly concerned that something much smaller would make me feel very under-horsed. I don't actually need a large horse, because I only weigh 10st 7lbs, but I'm quite tall, so a pony would also look silly. It's also difficult because while I require a very safe horse, I wouldn't like a plod, because my beautiful horse was a very responsive ride.
