Does anyone know of a truly waterproof turn out rug?

I recently purchased two Weatherbeeta Tristar turn out rugs for our two mares. Initially we were very pleased with the rugs. They fitted well and the liner system seemed to be a good idea but, guess what? Come the first rain storm we realised that they were not waterproof! The wet had saoked into the integral liner anywhere that the stitching went through - surcingles, leg straps, around the neck etc. This was after a couple of hours of consistent but moderate rain. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have a bucas and a few amigo ones. I have never had a problem with them. I dont think I have ever had a weatherbeeta.......

Try Amigo or Shires they are very good

Hmmm, all my Weatherbeeta rugs have been fine (and mine is out 24/7 in all weathers - in North Scotland). That said, nothing apart from Gore-tex is truly waterproof. I'd never use a Gore-tex rug though as it's not very breathable. I think the issue is the whole liner thing. I've always thought that theory was flawed. Every horse I've known turned out with a stable rug under a turnout (like the Tri star really) has ended up wet. Far better layering a lightweight turnout under a heavy one if it's really really cold.

The wet tends to seep UP stable rugs or liners underneath a turnout from splashing etc (or is it just that my mare is very close to the ground

Better to have a selection of weights of t/o rug - madam has been wearing her heavyweight Mark Todd in some disgusting weather the last couple of weeks and the lining is always dry. The wet bit at the bottom of the rug is always dry by the next day and we don't have a drying room - just hang them up in the hay barn.

Have Shires, Masta, Loveson and Mark Todd for my lad and none leak like that, OH has Horsewear and a Holmestead and neither of those leak.

Would ring WB and express your concerns.

Saying that, we had an Amigo full neck on trial for one of the mags a couple of years ago and it leaked in the first heavy shower we had but never did it again

My Amigo was really waterproof, in fact the only rug I've ever had that truly kept him dry and bone all over, without any damp patches forming underneath...even after heavy prolonged rain.

Not had a problem with any of my WB's and mine are years old now. Got one of the 1st taka combo rugs and its fantastic I am it's second owner and it is still going strong, never leaks.
I have an Aspen High neck too, don't use that much these days though.
The lightweight WB I have has seen better days and does leak however if I re proof it every year its fine, its a spare now, and one day it will probably be a donor rug for straps (i've already nicked the leg straps off of it).
I'd give WB a ring it doesn't sound right to me. Puts me off buying any of their new ones if that is the case.

I've got two Fal viking rugs I bought when I bought Dug 10 years ago. Both have been cleaned and straps reattached but not proofed, and both are still the warmest, driest, lightest rugs I own. They never cease to impress me, times have changed and I never seem to have the spare money to buy more Fals, things you could do as a one horse owner!!

Fal all the way for me too!
Best value for money rug you can buy, I have 4 all over 5yrs old, never touched in terms of cleaning etc yet still 100% warm and waterproof in the worst prolonged rain you can get. They are deep and especially fit cobs weel so no shoulder rubbing. Look online at Allthebestrugs

Another vote for FAL from me as well. Although find Redrae Saddlers more competitive than All The Best Rugs, and far nicer to deal with also.

I'd never buy Weatherbeeta as they never seem to fit the horses I have, regardless of what size/shape they are!

Horsewear all the way for me - Rambo if I am flush with cash, Rhino normally or Amigo if I'm skint like at the moment

They have all been excellent for waterproof-ness

I also have 2 Fal Vikings. One of them is almost 20 years old - never leaked and never been reproofed. Only ever had to be repaired once despite being on a pony that can wiggle out of other rugs!
