I'm considering letting my 2 year old (in about 9 months) go to an equine college to be backed and broken by the students. has anyone ever done anything like this before?
i've heard of places that take horses that need work for 2 years and they use them and at the end of the2 years you can have them back or they will help you sell them on. I can't decide if i should hang on and keep him (he may not make the size i want) or let him go off to be backed and schooled and then i can decide. I could back myself buy want him to have the best start and thought this would be a good option. in the meatime i can look for something i can ride. at the moment i have in in DIY livery which is costing me and i can't ride him anyway...i love him to bits and want the best for him.does anyone know of any colleges/places that do this? My other option is to pay and have him backed and schooled by someone proffesionally and then decide. he is 2 years old and standing at 14hh (IDxNew Forest)
 
At 2 years old, it would be nice to think he was stood in the field growing - until he was 4........
 
Two things.

I don't think many colleges will take him at that size, they only have bigger horses and secondly, they normally like all rounders.

Agree with Amy, he needs to be left to grow. I'd put your thoughts aside for another year and then think again :).
 
I'm not planning on doing anything for a while yet just considering my options. There is NO WAY i would consider anything while he is so young.
 
You might find that people who enjoy projects would back and bring him on for you for less, and enjoy keeping him that bit longer for less than a professional would charge. You'd still have to pay at least grass livery where he was, and something for their time though.
 
If you would really like him to go to a college can you have a nosey at thier websites and try to find an email for the yard manager or similar? Then you can just ask if there is any way they woulld be interested - simples :D
Ive generally found that the staff here in Aber and other colleges I've contacted are really good at answering random email queries so hopefully this is the same elsewhere.

Also - I know that most years the equine staff here go out to the sale to get some 'projects' for the students to break and school, and these would be welsh natives as they are cheap, so his height may not nessesarily leave him excluded
 
Thanks KitKat_89 have emailed one just to enquire if they do. He is 14hh at the mo but as only 2 years old i would expect him to grow more anyway. His dad was 13.2hh New Forest and his mum a 16.3hh Irish draft !! How he managed to reach that one i have no idea..lol
