Does anyone know what may be wrong?

When I ride my horse it feels like his off fore keeps giving way, it's a bit like a momentary stumble only he isn't tripping over anything. It happens several times on a ride, usually after the first half hour or so. That's the only way I can describe it. A couple of times over the last few months he has actually gone onto his knees although this doesn't by any means happen on a regular basis. I've lunged him and can never see it happening on the lunge. Has anyone any ideas on what could be wrong?

Tack, teeth, back etc checked? Maybe you could get someone else to ride him, or ask someone else to watch you and they can explain what it looks like, and maybe then you could ask your vet? Hope it gets better soon! xx

We had an old boy who did this quite a bit - his was due to arthritis in his shoulder after many years of team chasing in his younger days. He would just 'trip' for no reason, and it would happen several times on every ride, mainly in walk (he seemed ok in trot and canter). We often slipped him a sachet of bute if we knew we were going to be riding him (he was semi retired and not ridden often) and that seemed to help him.

is he walking forward enough? when the walk really lazily then they can just trip over their own feet. Also - if it's towards the end of the ride - maybe he's tired and not coping with the level of work?
simple questions first before neurological problems etc...! :)

Hi, sorry to hear about this but tbh it could be a number of things so it's probably best to get the vet to have a quick look or otherwise you may read things on here and think the worst!

It used to happen to one of my horses and it turned out to be dropped heels due to poor shoeing, then like MizElz says here her boy did it due to arthritis in the shoulder, so you could get all sorts of possible explanations and still be none the wiser.

Good luck x
