Does anyone know what these are?

They are for gaited horses like Tennessee Walkers, Saddlebreds, Paso Finos, etc. The chains jangle making them pick their front feet up high to exagerrate their gait action.

They are considered more humane compared to say, the soring that used to go on in the past with using chemicals to get the exagerrated action.

I am suprised to see them on a UK website though as you don't really have many gaited horse competitions over here like you do in Canada or the US. In fact, it's the first time I've seen a pair since coming over here!

the sort of thing they use to make the horses lift their legs higher... tennessee walking horses are trained with the same sort of thing

wow, never seen them before!

look like horse bondage

hehe

sidesaddle girl.... what chemical technique did they use previously? just out of interest?

Thanks for clearing that up!

I don't think any horse should have to lift its legs up higher than whats natural. Must give them a shorter active life as i would assume arthritus would take hold in their shoulders. Thats just my thoughts though! I can just imagine my horses face if i attached them to her ankles!!

God those really are nothing compared with some things used. I really don't like the way the Morgans are going and the way they try and achieve the action - and this is in previlent (sp) show horses that are 'seen' not behind the scenes horses.

Argh - getting off my soap box and back qucikly away from this thread!!

That has to be the most disgusting public display of abuse I have ever seen in my life; it's horrific. The silly woman who is suposedly meant to be an inspector wasn't even touching the legs and the horses are clearly in pain.
The pressure that they are putting on the back legs too, the unatural bowing of the leg, everything about it is utterly traumatsing to watch, let alone what the poor horse must be going through.
Is there no end to what hores will endure purely becasue we as supposedly, their superiors on a intelligence level, think it looks pretty?!
They should all be made to endure exactly what those horses are going through and see what they make of it then. Thank goodness for those people willing to put their safety at risk for these poor, poor creatures.

I believe that the video is an old one from the 1980's when they were starting to crack down on chemical soaring. I'm not into the gaited horse scene but I also believe now that gaited horse shows are VERY strict when it comes to show vetting, etc because of what happened in the 80's.

The walking horse site has these FAQ's:
http://www.walkinghorsefacts.com/faq.html

I don't think that gaited horses are very big business over here but horseloverz.co.uk does have a US sister site and I've noticed some "American" tack items sometimes show up on the UK site, this could be the case with the ankle chains.

Thanks Sidesaddlegirl, I shall have a good read of that.

I appreciate that in every discipline there are the trainers that abuse the rules but this just appeared to me to be encouraged suffering with the stacking of the shoes etc. I know that whatever we are asking hores is slightly unatural but a well trained animal with a knowledgable trainer should have it's natural beauty encouraged by correct training, not false aids..
I just don't think it is showing any talent to do it with weighted and stacked shoes..
