Can anyone help me?
Bella is doing really well, but she really doesn't like going over things on the right rein. She is fine on the left, does poles and jumps, on both sides of the school but will not go over anything the other way. She is also quite spooky on the right rein too and does not like going past H and tries to avoid it as there are barrels near it.
Does anyone know what can help? Each time she refuses or naps away from the edge we turn a circle and try again but she just point blank refuses every time. She doesn't buck or anything she just roots her feet into the ground and refuses to go anywhere.
Suggestions appreciated :)
Cookies for anyone who got this far :)

I read in a magazine recently that most horses favour the left side. Which is why we, mount, lead and do things up on the left and have been for hundreds of years.

I would get someone on the ground to give your horse a lead. Touch the barrels to show they are harmless, then just repetition. Sometimes horses have to learn things on one rein, and then learn the same thing from scratch on the other rein.

Desert Orchid (sp) could only race on a right (or was it a left) hand race track!! :)
Not very helpful I know just thought I'd let you know your neddy's in good company!! :)

how old is she? i agree with trying to get her to follow someone on foot, first. if she's physically fine (doesn't need back checking perhaps? one of mine was v left sided if her back was sore or wrong, evened-up perfectly when it was right) then i would do a few tests to make sure her vision in her right eye is fine - slowly wave hand across near it and see if she blinks, for example. i had a mare who developed a cataract in her right eye and suddenly became very left-sided (for obvious reasons, she liked the side where she could see things...)
you could get your back checked too - if you are very crooked then this will affect the horse.
check saddle too, ditto if it is crooked.

Horses favour the left because we do everything from that side, rather than them prefering it! Some basic checks, vision would be first, muscle issues second, if nothing shows up then schooling. sometimes they can play up because we are not so strong on the left side, and cannot maintain the same contact. Spiral down during flat work, start in the area she's happy with, take the circles down, and spiral back up if she looks alarmed. Perseverance, good luck!

She's 9, we've had her for a month today, she's been fine, got a saddle, it's wintec, been fitted by saddle fitter. Not had back/eyes checked, but does always blink if you touch around/something goes near either of her eyes so i don't think it's that, but will see tomorrow. Will see if just perseverance schooling works if nothing is found, but what I do know is that she was at a dealers for 3 months *we bought her off them* and was basically allowed to do whatever she wanted and wasn't properly disciplined or anything and is quite green. Have no idea about her past before that apart from she was born and bred in ireland and was transported over here by the dealer. Don't know whether any of that is any use though.
