I got my lovely new cob 3 weeks ago and he is an absolute star.so easy to do and a real gem.bought him as a confidence giver as have had a couple of years out of saddle due to having a baby and concentrating on daughters pony. have slowly started getting my confidence back and been doing lots of hacking out.all was going well until we decided to have a canter!he sort of leaps in the air and 'jumps'forward for every stride.he doesnt do this in the school on when out!should i push him on and let him go or try and stop him?!my initial reaction is to stop as i have turned into a wuss!!really dont know why he does this as he is good as gold in school.he has no back saddle or teeth problems and is 8 year old irish cob.he is not a plod and strides out in walk and trot(which i dont mind) but its just this leaping in canter cos i really cant sit to it and have nearly come off twice!does anyone elses horse canter this way on hacks????

Possibly excitement? Did you get him from the area he's used to (ie does he know the hacking and been cantered in the same places etc)?

I had a chestnut arab mare like this when I was younger and I just kept her going - when she wanted to stop she got kicked on! She soon learnt that it wasn't in her best interests to keep cantering when I didn't want to.

My horse broncs at canter a lot and I've found the best thing to do is just kick her on. If you stop every time he does this he may start to think of it as an easy way to get out of doing work.
He sounds as if he just needs to let off a little steam and have some fun.

no he didnt come from round here,it just feels like he is bucking but he is just leaping forward like show jumpers do upto big jumps!!!i need to stop being such a wimp!hve been riding since i could walk but since having my little boy ive turned into a total scaredy pants!!:-(

Took me a few months finally made post on here in desperation and following week it all stopped.I found it was excitement.I still have to sit to huge leaps sideways but keeping my leg on and ongoing schooling has really helped. Good luck

i would say push him on he wont do it forever my cob always does a big leap into canter wen out hacking im used to it now its fun

Get someone to take him out and whack him on the bum when he does it! I did it on my friends 14.2 who kept bucking her off - he got a massive smack, did it again, got a yank in the gob then never bucked with her again....not saying it will be that easy but you never know!

I can confirm he does this as first time he did it i got on to see if he did it again(which he did) just felt like bronking but think he was just putting so much into it that he was like a bouncy rocking horse. I will try him on canter for you if you want providing you dont get me too drunk on friday
