Is it legally possible?

Trailer weighs 800kg so surely if both horses combined weight is less than 1000kg then you can tow with a freelander, which has a towing capacity of 1800kg, I think?

Thanks :)

I think a Freelander has a towing capacity of 2000kg. I used to tow with one (the older model and then the newest model). It was good with two 13'2 ponies in an IW505 and then a 16'2 who weighed 600kg and a 13'2 in the same trailer, but really struggled with two horses which I'm sure would have been over its limit and I only tried it the once. I sold up in the end and got a larger trailer and a Discovery which copes extremely well.

FREELANDER TOWING CAPACITIES
They are all listed as being 2000 !!

if it is a 2000 kgs towing capacity....

double horse trailer such as a HB506 = 920 kgs empty

Two horses at 500 kgs each = 1000

Total = 1920 leaving 80 kgs for other bits

Therefore legally and safely possible

Did see in many posts that the mark 1 Freelanders (pre 2006) did not pull too well

do you accurately know (ie not by weighttape) how much your horses' weight OP?

I for one would certainly prefer to have extra towing capacity than cutting it fine.

Wouldn't argue with the legal. Safe or even sensible, not in a million years

This is a bit worrying.....!!

Why would the manufacturer state a towing capacity that the car wasn't capable of if it wasn't safe?

Probably. I doubt they have been tested to the extreme. Have you ever had a horse go down or panic in a trailer, I have.

When the trailer starts moving and jumping around behind you it can be a challenge, even for the big 4 x 4s. Little ones wouldn't stand a chance of controlling the trailer.

I always like at least 1 tonne extra capacity i.e. Disco can tow 3.5 tonnes I wouldn't want to tow much more than 2.5. Of course thats living cargo.

Each to his/her own of course, you make your own decisions and if necessary take the consequences.

I am just giving my opinion, others will differ.

Freelanders are only about 120BHP for the 1.8 up to 160bhp for the 2.2, might manage to pull the skin of a rice pudding, if it's a thin skin

We are giggling at that in our house! Mechanic- hubby says thats about right!

Why not hire a bigger 4x4 for the days you take something else out?

I had a freelander 1 (2000) and when I towed my admittedly quite heavy rice trailer with my 14.3 lightweight mare in it it was fine but when we went down a very steep hill I had a very strong feeling if it had been a heavier horse the trailer would have pushed the car! Now have a shogun and use of my husbands defender as have a heavier horse and also take friend who part owns my new trailer's horse and the freelander would never have coped. Personally I wouldn't tow a horse over 500kg with one and definitely never 2.
