Does anyone mind explaining stocks to me?

So I have recently entered my first competition (Unaffiliated dressage) and have been advised by friends and other riders to buy a stock shirt (with a stock attached it seems) among other things instead of a stock itself and to not to worry about getting one. The entire idea of a stock was completely new to me until recent so I have very little knowledge about them. Originally I thought you could buy a shirt and pair it with a stock or have a shirt with a stock attached but I have gotten a bit confused as if that’s correct and if so how to identify between a shirt with a stock attached and shirt that you need to pair with a stock. I recently have looked and purchasing this stock shirt:

Be suitable for what I’m looking for? If not are there any that someone could recommend?

So that’s one you team with your own stock that’s what I prefer .
You can get them with a false stock that you use remove when want to use your own .

Always seem a very odd bit of kit which had some uses back in the day but are more just style/tradition now. Although saying that I did see a traditional stock (the one you have to tie) being used as a temporary bandage once on the hunt field ?

I prefer a shirt which you match with your own choice of stock. That looks like the one you have linked. You can then swap them as you like. You can get pre tied stocks which Velcro at the back. Easy to use but don’t look quite as nice. Untied ones you need to learn how to tie them and that is a bit fiddly but they look smarter. If you’re showing I’d go for untied. For anything else, the pre tied one should do the trick.

ETA there’s a lady who does lovely pre tied stock bibs with loads of choices and they look really smart - Buckover equi bibs. You don’t really need any proper shirt for those, I wear them with a t shirt underneath.
