Does anyone mind there gelding being turned out with a mare?

We have a mixed herd of 2 geldings and 2 mares. It never even crossed my mind to question they would be ok once they sort out a hierarchy! If I were you, I would be nice & pleasant but firmly put my point across. If she is that desperate to avoid them meeting then she can get her horse in. As for what can and can't go outside your stable?? I'd be tempted to tell her to p*** off.. everybody has different ways of doing things but she has to be more tolerant or flexible than what she has been. As for having a pop at the young uns, well that's a bit sad IMO. I would tick her off for that!! :D

I think it is far more natural having mixed herds and prefer it.

We had a mare in with our geld (and another 2 gelds) until she was PTS recently bless her, just the three lads together now. I say lads, I mean 2 lads and an old git lol :D

Iv been there 3 weeks and im being driven mad!! I have never had any arguments with any liveries and im getting very sick of this lady and another one!! Put my mare out with my friends gelding this morn and one of the other liveries came and asked if we could bring them in as she wanted to put her gelding out and didnt want 2 geldings out with a mare as it would cause problems  They'd been out for 2 hours, she was very persistent and said this is the only hour my horse can go out so we got them in :( So now there stuck in for the rest of this lovely day  Im usually a very nice person but im on the verge of cracking!! There all talking about a rota now which i dont think will work out anyway but im going to the YO about it asap!!

My boy used to live in a field with 4 mares.... Never a problem. Once he did jump out but I think that was because they were all in season LOL!

OP - I wouldn't bring my horse in because of that. I know she is fine with geldings. However if the geldings in the field are known to be riggy or agressive when a mare is in season that is another matter and its up to the YO to sort some alternative grazing out. My mare is out with 2 geldings and shes fine, no injuries. If their horses are fine I would tell them to suck it up and get on with it. How on earth do horses survive in the wild in a mixed herd?!!!!!

My mare is out with 2 Geldings. Shes fine and so are they. Infact if we bring one in we have to bring them all in, bunch of poofs! :D

Pahahahaha love it. I don't know why it conjured up images of horses in tutus with cups of tea and cigarettes.. Must be what working Saturdays does to you!

Move livery yards. i would find that 3 hour turn out rubbish unacceptable.!!

My Mare and Gelding live out together as a pair very happily, I've come across people at yard who say they shouldnt be turned out together but i have never had an issue with it myself...

I love it, my mare has had many boyfriends :p and is very friendly and sociable. Move her to a yard where they turn out separately? I just couldn't do it to her lol

As far as im aware none are riggy although my friends gelding and other womans horse had a bit of a squelling match and both went to kick. After that they were eating happily but the other livery asked me to bring my friends gelding in as she didnt want hers getting injured, hes not even my horse but they seem to come to me and not friend. So she was happy enough to have her gelding and my mare together that day  Other (loopy) livery who doesnt want mares near her gelding was perfectly happy to stand and eat with my mare along with the othe 5 geldings until one of her minyens must have rang her so she came storming in ready to kill!!

I would tell them if they don't like it, its tough. They are not to interfer with your horse and why should your horse get the short straw and be in when theirs are all out most of the day. I would be seething if this were my yard OP.

It depends on the mare. One on our yard hates geldings with a passion so no I wouldnt turn him out with her although they were fine with a fence between them I wouldnt trust her without. But with a mare that is not like the other one then yes I would, he is a bit hen pecked any way so tends to stay out of the way. He used to be out with mares at his last home but he couldnt get near them as there was a stalion in there too so now he is a bit like a kid in a sweet shop when a mare is near by and will just follow her untill she tells him to do one when he runs off to hide .
Your new yard sounds decidedly dodgey with only a few hours turn out in this nice weather and only one field surley these people knew about the turn out situation before they moved there so they should either get on with it or move on.

I have a stubborn gelding cob and he lived with my sisters stubborn mare and yes they fought sometimes and he did get a few kicks(gash on his hind). But on the whole if they are mixed well I have never known this to be a problem at all?? I think mine were two of a kind! or just that they were two and no others? Perhaps not a big enough herd. I have never known mixing them to be an issue though?

When the mare left I was quite pleased !
