Well, they will still get fleas, you just have to manage it.

I have four cats and they are given frontline to all of them every six weeks or so. Nothing will eradicate them totally.

Fleas do not trully live on the dog/cat (so I have been told) - they jump on for a quick meal and then return to where they breed - usually in carpets, bedding etc - so not only do you need to keep treating the animals but also their/your environment.

Great flea shampoo is Head and Shoulders!!

hi, i have carpet cleaned all the house lol to get rid of them, is that shampoo good to use then, i no there are some herbal ways aswell, like tea tree etc, does anyone no if they work.

I would - because apart from anything else if you are having that much a problem with them they can have serious health implications on your animals.

When you have tret (sp?) the animals try using a Dr Martins? (I think) Flea Bomb in thier usual sleeping area. Not when they're in there though. That usual gets rid of them from thier enviroment.

easiest way to get rid of fleas is to get the Pest Control people to come in and spray your whole house (they come in unmarked vans) they spray your mattress, bed, carpets, skirting boards, settee, cushions, infact everything cause the little blitters can live anywhere and the eggs can lay dormant for months. If you use the normal stuff from vets etc it will cost you a fortune to spray your whole household and in general it doesn't last very long. When i found a flea I called them round and they even sprayed the cat and dog this was years ago and i have never had or seen one since

Recommend this way any time

flea jab?? or flea collars??

i remember my cat had fleas, we didnt realise until she layed on my bed and i woke up the next morning covered in bites. my god they were itchy!!!!!!

Frontline is great, but keep them regularly done with it. Also garlic in food is good as it goes into the blood and fleas don't like it (apparantly)

A vet once told me if you have cats, you will always have fleas.
Even if you are on top of flea controll the second they go out they will bring more in.TBH I would either call pest controll and have them spray the house or get some rai and or Dr martin flea bombs to do the house with as well as keeping up the normal flea treatment for the pets.
If they are short haird the flea comb is good.

I believe ' supermarket'brands only repel fleas, best bet is to try something like Frontline or Stronghold and I'd probably use something like Drontal or Milbemax to treat for a possible tapeworm too!!! Have a chat with a Veterinary Nurse, they can let you know which can be brought from a vets only or available over the counter.
p.s All 'good' vet surgeries should offer a free flea check consult with a nurse.

my cat had fleas twice. she had the jab after her 2nd bout and for 10 years never had fleas again. died in july 06 at the grand old ages of 14!

THE PROBLEM IS YOU ARE TREATING THE ANIMALS AND NOT YOUR HOUSE, YOU NEED TO GET A PERSCRIBED FLEA TREATMENT FROM YOUR VET COS PET SHOP PRODUCTS DO NOT WORK!!! neither do flea collars!!!
you need to ask your vet for a house treatment, because the fleas lay eggs in carpets, and skirting boards!!
SO WHEN YOUR FLEA TREATMENT RUNS OUT ON THE ANIMALS THE FLEAS IN THE CARPETS E,T,C HATCH AND JUMP BACK ON THE ANIMALS!! HENCE THE CYCLE CONTINUES!! FRONTLINE IS A GOOD TREATMENT FOR PETS AND A SPRAY CALLED ACCLAIM FOR YOUR HOUSE.
YOU MAY BE CHARGED A ONE OFF CONSULTATION TO WEIGHT YOUR PETS, BUT AFTER THAT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO JUST CALL IN AND COLLECT TREATMENT WITHOUT A CONSULT. HAPPY FLEA KILLING!!!

Hi, as a vet nurse i can honestly say that the only products to get rid of fles (that you can buy over the counter at the vets) are frontline and stronghold. (There are a few others but these are the ones we stock at my practice). If your dog and cats already have fleas, you need to treat the whole house with Vetkem. You need to use on the carpets and all soft furnishings (do a patch test first to check it doesn't ruin whatever you are spraying). You need to use the spray downstairs before you go to bed (and keep all pets out of treated rooms) then do upstairs when you go to work. Treat all pets AT THE SAME TIME, this is very important otherwise fleas just go from one pet to the other. Again, treat your pets before you go to bed so that your not touching the treated area. Your pets must not get really wet i.e. a bath or downpour of rain 24 hours before and after treatment. As advised previously by someone else, treat all pets for worms as tapeworm can act as a vector (host) for a stage in the flea's lifecycle. Pet shop products DO NOT WORK although frontline has just been re-licensed so it can be bought in supermarkets and pet shops. Hope this helps!!! Oh and please keep an check that your pet's don't suffer with FAD (flea allergic dermatitis) as a result of the flea problem. Any skin problems you find, take them to your vet.
