Does anyone not hack out?

I've just looked at your sig pictures again:) I think you need to look at them too;)

(((hugs)))

Not too sure that would help!!

I like the idea of maybe taking them to the beach, or maybe to the xc course that we have nearby. thanks all!

I hack out at least once per week and i cant imagine not going out. Its fab for stress relief and my horse loves going out!!

However, At our yard we have two liveries who have never haked out. I feel a little sorry for their horses as both of them are ace horses to hack and v well behaved! Their owners are extremely nervous but i think they would really enjoy it if they could get over their intial fear!

I don't blame you for not wanting to hack! I've read what happened and I don't think I'd hack after that.
There's plenty of things you can do in the school without going round and round :)

I had an accident on my pony hacking out luckily we were both ok but it was very scary and it was due to a rogue driver not my pony being spooky or silly. My pony is very good in traffic normally and we used to hack out on our own all over the place.

For ages I did not want to hack out on my own in case it happened again. However I am now hacking him on a bridleway on my own which has little road work and also on the road but not the same road where we had our accident. I still worry about going out on the roads but I try and remind myself that if i had not had an accident then I would not be worried and the risk has not changed in terms of likelyhood of having an accident I am just more aware of what could happen.

My pony does not like being schooled much and it would be very restrictive to not hack him out - I don't have horse transport so if I did not hack him out he would be stuck going round the same school all the time and I also would not be able to compete or join in the RC rallies. I can hack to a lot of shows and riding club training.

I think you have to think about the risks, is donovan sensible in traffic, are the hacking companions sensible in traffic, have they been on a road and ride safety course, will they wear hi viz, how bad are the roads. Of course there is a risk of a horrible accident on the roads but there is also a risk of an accident in the school, the field etc.

I just cant get over the fear of having my pony out on the road, after my accident I had a couple of years ago. Its just a mind thing with me, but I cant get past it.

I can totally understand where you are coming from after your accident. But I couldn't live without hacking, I hate the school to the point of being very claustrophobic about going in there. On a hack I am relaxed and happy.
Does depend on the horse though. I wouldn't hack my mare on the road as she was terrible in traffic so not worth the risk, I would box her to the downs or ride in our XC field though. My geldings I couldn't imagine not hacking - they both adore it, in fact Alf has done nothing else but hack!!
Is there a compromise, could you box out to some off road riding somewhere? It would be a shame for the rider and donovan not to have a hack.

Is there another girl the same age or slightly older that hacks out and would take said pony out with her? Or if there is another girl around the same age, would the girl riding your pony like to go to the beach for the first time out so she could see what he is like instead of going straight into x country? Whatever you decide to do, pictures and a report would be lovely ;)

I don't hack out. Far too dangerous with the narrow bendy roads, fast drivers & big wagons round me! We do go to the beach & off road hacking when possible. We also go SJ & hunting for a bit of variety.

Can't imagine having a horse and not hacking out, I like a variety, however I can understand why people choose not to for what ever reasons, but if you have a sensible horse and safe hacking then its a lot for a horse to miss out on I think and has many benefits.

I was hit by a car a few years ago and lost my horse so I refuse to put my new horse at risk. I keep my horse on a yard with farmland to ride on though as I couldnt imagine not being able to hack out. I dont blame you for not wanting to go out on the roads but could you find somwhere with off road riding?
