Does anyone prefer Hiking boots over Expensive 'Horsey' Boots?

Another vote for Hi-Tec from me! My last pair had big cracks in them and still remained waterproof I wear them with waterproof trousers and they are as good as wellies :)

I'm another that has switched to walking boots, I bought a couple of pairs when we got our new dog as my equestrian boots rubbed, and they've been fab (one pair is regatta and the other an american make that I can't remember, but the rrp was £250, I paid £40)

They've been waterproof, supportive, the right temperature, long lasting and comfy. :)

I've also had equestrian boots that have split and not resisted horse urine, and they weren't cheap ones either!

I bought some Hi-Tec boots from the Outdoors shop about 3 weeks ago. Was in need of some new short boots and after looking at the Mountain Horse Classic which have jumped up to £77, decided no way was I paying that price! The Hi-Tecs are really really good, cost half the price of the others I had seen, were comfy from the first time on and are just so nice. Wont look again in the Tack Shops, prices are crazy! Saw some long patent leather boots the other day, £699 !!

I have just ordered a pair of hi-tecs from amazon for £25 as my muckers have split. Hopefully I have the same good experience with them as you all have :)

My Meindl walking boots are 11 years old and but wouldn't wear them for mucking out.

I love Mountain Horse mountain Rider boots for the yard. They're half the price of my walking boots and are designed to withstand horse muck and menage surfaces. They last for years despite daily abuse.

Mountain Horse, Ariat and Le Chameau make superb yard boots that are good enough for wearing on and off the yard.

Ah but you sound like a "top of the range" lady while the rest of us are cheapies!x

My brother would love you. He works in the outdoor shop selling boots to people and raves about Mammut stuff, lol. Too expensive for me although he was much impressed by my beautiful Marmot soft shell :)

Just waiting for mine to arrive, 'as new' from ebay for less than 1/2 price. I know they have raving reviews and tbh I love the little mammoth emblem :p
I work gardening for 6 hours a day so as well as all the horsey stuff they are a work boot.
I do have Ariat pro-devon (that I won) for riding but wouldn't want to wear them for much else.
Also having on/off problems with my back I can't find anything else as comfy as hiking boots.

Well Ive order a pair off ebay. My poor feet are so sore walking in muckers. As I'm walking beau out longer now I cant end up being lame myself!!

You won't regret it. These I've had donkeys years and I've worn them everyday. Rarely do I get the problems I used to with my back. All for £28 !!!

Ive always worn steel toe capped trainers they are really cheap and my last pair i had for 7 years mega cheap and are easy to ride in aswell my current pair are the same manufacturer as last time and have costs me £20.74 including postage from ebay i even got OH a pair fo the horses and hos were the same price cant beat them to be honest.

Be really careful about wearing steel toe caps around horses, you do need equine specific ones, there is a different standard due to the different loading. A horse standing on your foot is different to dropping a brick on your foot and if you wear traditional toe caps and a horse stands on your foot the steel toe cap can make your injuries worse, amputating a toe. You need a fully enclosed steel toe rather than just a cap if you are wearing them round horses.

Thanks Kat ive got the highest rated steel rating you can get which it more than the equine ones are they are specificially for heavier loads not bricks ~(dads works with them and knows the best ones to get:cool:)and my clydie had stood on mine several times and without any problems at all so I rate them better than a hiking boot which with my guys as it offers no protection at all.

Cool, I am just aware of the toe slicing effects of having the wrong ones and didn't want people to think that it was necessarily cheaper to buy steel toe cap boots from workwear manufacturers. I think the important thing is the total toe capsule rather than just a cap, but I can't remember the proper numbers for the different standards.

Beautiful walking boots used for mucking out???? *Faints in horror*

Mind you cheapy ones are probably perfect for the purpose, but I'm about to fork over a big wodge for some new boots and there is noooooo way any horse pee is getting within a country mile of them. My last ones have died after the acidity of falling into a bog killed their waterproofing, can't imagine what horse pee would do:o

I got my hiking boots off freecycle years ago, so they didn't cost me a penny! :D

They're fantastic, I wear them all the time, and I do ride in them too as I always use the elastic sided safety stirrups anyway.

Ha... I have one of the wettest mares in the land and my hiking boots may smell for an hour but thats not what finally killed them off !!

I am so glad I came on here today! Thank you for the advice as I was mourning the sad and very quick demise of my Ariat H2O boots purchased last year to do a Western Trail Ride in the USA. My other half said it was because I hadn't looked after them! Hes probably right but I can see from the comments on here that others have experienced the same issue! I seldom rode in mine when I got home, they were fantastic in America, perfect for camping, wet weather, riding, getting on and off etc. I had plantor faciitus (spelling??) before I got my mits on these boots - and since wearing them it has gone because they were so comfy. Anyway I am fed up with wet feet and thanks to these pages I have just ordered some Hi-Tec boots, at £20 or so less than the others would cost to replace. Here's hoping they will last a bit longer than the others (still sad though). And the PF won't come back! :)

OH and I both wear walking boots - he paid a mind-boggling (for him!;)) €109 some six or seven years ago, and mine were about €60.

Bearing in mind OH is very heavy footed and wears his boots almost every day, €109 wasn't such a huge outlay. He's had them re-soled once, the leather uppers are still in very good order and as long as he continues to look after them, I expect his boots will out live him!:D

My cheapie €60 jobs are also doing alright. I haven't had to re-sole them yet, but there's still alot of wear left in them. The uppers are fabric, and so far, I've had no problem with water leaks. Time will tell. ;):)

Well Ive got mine today and now wearing them around the house!! There are so comfory cant wait to go for nice walks without my tendons flareing up!!! A very happy ebay buyer!!

Got my ebay bargain 'Mammuts' today. Boy their comfy. Happy Feet :D

best boots ive ever bought are a pair of hiking boots i got for £12 from Aldi! have out lasted all the expensive horsey brand boots ive owned and are as comfy as trainers :)

I had a pair of Hi-Tec walking boots which lasted nearly 20 years, comfy and never let the water in, unlike the two pairs of Derby House wellies I have had this last winter (one being a replacement for the first pair) which cracked and split within 2 months.

Hi-Tec should LOVE this forum!! I got a lovely pair, super comfy, didn't go for the cheapest but love em. Tried them out on wet field this morning - no wet feet - bliss :) Ariats sat in barn looking forlorn.... awh!

Yes!

My Hi-Tec boots last 5 years...I'm getting some more for this winter.

:D

Mine original ones lasted years, through farm work etc. Unfortunately none of the more recent ones lasted more than a month or so, caved straight in on the heels and different shape to the old ones.

I swore by them in the past but would go Toggi boots every time now. They last a reasonable amount of time and my knees don't feel like they've been smashed into the ground all the time in them!
