Does anyone ride (english) in a stock type saddle ?

toying with the idea for comfort and stability and wondered if it hindered rising trot (as know they aren't designed for)

anyone one have one and can advise or similarly anything secure, deep seat, comfty

Curently have a new shape synth isabelle werth - but doesn't put me in best position

I used to ride in an Australian stock saddle. It didn't interfere with my rising trot but I was very young then so things might be different now.

What I did find was that the stock saddle gave me an inordinate amount of security and comfort. I could have ridden in that saddle for hours.

Strangely I tried it on a known rearer. Not normally a good idea as you cannot get out of a stock saddle very quickly, but wow was I secure. Nothing was going to budge me and the horse took comfort from that. However if there is a chance of the horse coming down or you needing to get out of the plate super quick, these saddles are not good.

They are beautiful saddles and very heavy.

My friend and her husband used to ride in Australian stock saddles, they were both older and had two nutty ex-hunters that they used for charging about the countryside causing mahem (no schooling or jumping). They loved them and found them really helpful for their various ailments. I rode in them once, they were comfy but you are right I don't think you could rise to the trot in one.
 
They are comfy and secure, but it's hard to get one to fit in the UK. The quality of "made to measure" version which can be ordered in UK is questionable. I found a wonderful South African version on ebay -old but good fit and beautiful quality. Genuine ozzy ones can be very heavy, and are built for ozzy stock horses - they tend to e very narrow IME. Wintec do one, which a friend uses. She likes it and finds it gives her a lot of confidence.
Oh, you can rise to trot, but you tend to ride long in them.
 
Love them! But then I worked in Oz for a while so got very used to riding in them. You can rise to the trot, but make sure you get one which is comfy for you. I even used to jump a horse in one.

Backed my current mare in an old stock saddle in case she bucked. She didn't but they give you great security.

I think I remember seeing details of a guy who would make them in the UK but no idea of quality.
 
Iv'e got the Wintec stock saddle on the OH's big PRE. Both of them love it and the OH learnt to ride in it and he has never fallen off. Posting trot is not a problem at all but as Landcruiser said most people ride long so you very rarely see anybody posting.
I'd have one for my horse if i could but they are too long for him
 
I ride in a wintec stock saddle and do a lot of trotting & don't have a problem. I had mine fitted by the local saddle fitter to make sure it was a good fit. My horse seems to like it as well, she's a lot less sharp & spooky.
I fell in love with these saddles on a horse back safari in Botswana, it involved fast riding & lot of jumping (ditches & trees pushed over by elephants) as well as galluping up & down dried up river beds.
It was 10 years before I could afford to buy one but it was worth the wait.
 
I've got a leather one that I'd like to get rid of, it's in good condition, I don't want any money for it, so would be happy to give it to anyone who wants it.
I'm in North Oxfordshire - it weighs a ton though!

What size it is? I know someone who would love this if it would fit
 
I would love one but they are too long and not wide enough. if your horse is a medium fit then the Norton stock saddles are apparently ok (I know, I know-Norton saddles have a bad rep but when looking the stcok saddles seemed well thought off) and they are cheap and synthetic so lighter. Lots of Indian made ones to watch out for and nearly all of them seem very narrow. The wintecs have a good reputation but it would have too curvy a tree for mine.

The Norton stock saddle came free with the OH's horse and i thought it was an ok fit until i got the Wintec and started researching then i realised that there is very little spinal clearance with them, it's narrow all the way down and sits on muscles it really shouldn't , it also has a horrible sitting position, just wrong for some reason compared to the Wintec, the 17 is massive too, in seat and in length! ok to start with but i wouldn't get another. xx

ah, fair enough-there was one on eBay for £50 and had it been wider I might have taken a punt-not seen on in RL.
 
sorry to semi hijack this post, has any one ridden a large shouldered short coupled beast in an Icelandic saddle, reading up on them they seem to have very flexible trees and also cope with large shoulders and movement?

Do they do 'em in Fell sizes though? (my hubby is really really really hoping not :))

Erm....yes ;) The Portuguese (larger picture) can be got made to measure for really not a lot, and the Dueber can be customised too. Sorry.
 
sorry for the size of the pic,
i know about the cost but i would like to try it to see if this is all hype. i like the increased flexibility with the support.
