Does anyone ride in a heather moffett? What about jumping in it?

Due to having a wide Cob who (through illness this year) lost a lot of weight rapidly and his saddle no longer fitted him, I've bought him/me a Heather Moffett soft treed GP saddle.

We get on fine with with it, and he moves so much better as his big shoulder isn't being restricted. And once it warms up it is so comfortable that I could ride for hours in it!

But I want to know if anyone uses theirs for jumping? I'm not brill at jumping and only really want to jump about 2ft to 2ft 6.

Has anyone jumped these sorts of height in them and were they ok? I want to go to an Adult riding camp this summer so I am unsure whether I would be ok to do the jumping & XC part in this saddle or whether I now need to look out for a cheap jumping one like Wintec or something?

Any advice please?

Oh FFS you and your saddle issues woman!

Ummmm dunno, no useful wisdomy type input from me! Just thought I'd annoy you!

Hmf then I'm borrowing your Falcon then for Pontispool!!

Wanna come with me? The July one? We can do the BABY/Beginners stuff together (obviously YOU don't need it but you & the baby-boy will have to come and baby-sit me LOL)

May need to speak to Julia Whoolia the saddle fairy!!

Freddie says he's not lending you his falcon, its comfy like! Pah I'll think about it and let you know when this pissing snow disappears! He's had nearly 6 weeks off due to flooded arena, frozen solid arena/icy roads and now the snow! I'm beginning to think I'll have to start all over again with a loony if I don't get back on him soon! Bring on the body protector!

Well done ester thats tip top advice!
Freddie says when are you and Frank coming to visit huh? Freddie likes Frank but would prefer if we didnt meet in a thunder storm next time please
smile.gif
Oh and somewhere with no very stingy cattle wires too!

note to self meet freddie in a very quiet field with noone else around and no obstructions anywhere!

Franks says he is available for visits whenever as his mum has now passed her trailer test!

He is currently doing his bit chaperoning a recently backed 4 yo on her first hacks, though 4yo appears to be better behaved

4yos rider said last time 'oh yes he does spook rather doesnt he'

mum hacked him today for me and he bounced round the block apparently (doesnt he know how old he is!)
unfortunately she said this weather also doesnt make her wont to build an arena as we wouldnt be able to use it when we needed it anyway

damn it!

back to OP it is a gp so why wouldnt you be able to jump in it? surely thats the point, and 2'6 isnt that big so I dont see any problems unless it is likely to roll around said wide cob? I bet its comfy

The OP is being a plonk! The heather moffet saddle, the OP and the said wide cob will all be absolutely fine jumping whatever they like!

Aw Freddie is very nearly a big growned up horsey now! (hopefully given recent time off, he was 6 weeks ago!) Bucking has all but stopped cos he's decided he would rather have mum on board. We only do normal excited/cross bucks now that are about a tenth of the vigor and height of his old bucks and easy peasy to stay on. Last time he did one of those in temper in the school he got his leg caught in the fence

and stood patiently with a look of 'damn that backfired' until we were freed and then decided to do just as I had orginally asked cos his way had failed! LOL I'm finally very pleased with how he is going actually, he is having more and more frequent episodes of absolute brilliance on the flat.

Wohooo go you passing your trailer test! Me next! I'm ditching the lorry, Fred prefers trailers and with Cat all but retired I can't see the point in running a lorry for one horse that doesn't like travelling in it...I still havn't bothered fixing it! :O
This is the best hijack I've ever done on a post! LOL

Fab news re the bucking
smile.gif
very pleased to hear it. staying on is good

now if you could just sort franks spooking (*coughs* he is erm 17 now

)

LOL! Bless spooky Frank! Freddie says he will protect him cos he is a big boy now (he grew another rug size over the summer the little git...and last time he had a few weeks off I nearly got vertigo getting back on him!) and practically never spooks at nuffin, unless tis a freddie eating monster and there are a suprising amount of them about!

OPoster - I had a Heather Moffet about 6 yrs back. I really didn't like it I am afraid. Whenever I went to get back on it (let's say, during a hack where I had to open a really tricky gate), the whole thing would end up under my horse's stomach the minute I tried to get on, no matter how tight the girth was.
I felt very unstable going down hills on hacks. I think I did do some small jumps on it in the school but I would not have considered doing a lot.
If you are getting on with it on the ground though, there is probably no reason you wouldn't be OK jumping. I think you either love them or hate them. It's good that you love them tho!

Thankees everyone and yes I am probably being a 'bit' of a plonk (thanks Temsik!!). I think I'm just having a bit of nerves as I've set my self some goals this year and now thinking cr8p!! lol!!

It IS incredibly comfy though (once it's warmed up as they are not that nice for the first 5-10 mins) and having a very comfy Cob it's like an arm chair - so if anyone fancies a go....lol!!

Also Ester well done on your towing test!!

I think you'll be fine, try it. Some people seem able to mount from the ground in one fine, I can't, but that's because I'm not as agile as I used to be. I prefer to mount from a block, bank, fence etc anyway. I didn't have a problem getting into treeless saddles from the ground a few years back, the key was a good spring and getting your hand over the other side of the saddle to balance it.
If people are planning to jump seriously in a HM saddle then the GPT (Tall) model gives more knee room. For what you're planning though, I'd say just try it. Have fun.

Soft tree'd? I.e the fhoenix treeless?

it's not the treeless part that makes it hard to jump in, it's the set back stirrups.

I had a HW saddle a while ago and whilst it was THE comfiest saddle to ride in for hacking and dressage, it was HORRIBLE to jump in! The stirrups were set right back (like all HM saddles) and it made balancing really hard. Fine if you were only jumping small (i.e under 2'6 ish) but once the jumps went up and you needed to start using your stirrups it was just awful.

I've still got his normal treed Ideal saddle which just about fits him still (but just not as good) so I can pad that out and use that. I'm hoping that he will muscle up back into it coming out of the winter so I can use it again, but can see me using this HM saddle for a few months yet.
