I absolutely would NOT have a big dog or one that shed hair on/in my bed!! As it is, Tuppence gets round both of those obstacles, by being 10ins high and not shedding hair!! She is the BEST hot water bottle EVER and the cuddliest teddybear in the morning - she's not like most dogs and it happy to to get up when you do, be that at 5 am or 10 am!! She likes to sleep in the crook of your arm if it's cold or with just her toes under the covers and her head on a pillow.
That's made me sad, as she's not here anymore, as when I moved and changed jobs, she had to go and live with my Mum - SIX hours away
My OH and I share our bed with a beagle/pointer mix and two beagles. Usually the mix gets down after an hour or so which frees up a good part of the bed. Thank goodness for king size beds!
We've never had any problems with them being in bed with us or being on the furniture. In fact if one of us gets up one of the beagles will move to our spot to keep it warm for us like a good pack dog. She moves immediately when we come back and is better than any hot water bottle!
Said I never, ever would but am off work sick today and puppy would have been all alone downstairs, so when OH went off to work I carried him up and let him lie on the bed - he put his head straight down and dozed all morning with me.

Wont be a regular habit though!
[/ QUOTE ] Nah, thats just part of the slipery slope - I bet it does become a regular habit now that you have done it once - cos its lovely
I must say that because my are poodles they are like sleeping with little wooly people and they don't shed of course
Another whippet owner with a bed full! My two sleep with me at night, they are total bed hogs, they insist on getting right under the duvet and the little ones likes to sleep with all four legs stuck out at right angles... She also groans and barks in her sleep.
I've been told that whippets have been specifically bred to snuggle up to you under the duvet as this was a useful trait when poachers were trying to smuggle their dogs in and out of the woods under their coats. Very much doubt it is true but a lovely story never-the-less.
My doggy sleeps on the bed all the time, and if its cold she gets IN the bed and puts her head on the pillow, even though she is only little she gets most of the room and I am allowed my tiny bit to curl up in.
My JRT gets on the bed under the covers and either sleeps in the crook of my legs or behind me. Used him as a hot water bottle last night as i was cold. i have been told how naughty this is to let your dogs on the bed but having read this post I see a lot of people do it so don't feel so naughty!!!!
My whippet x patterdale sleeps under the duvet every night. She follows me to bed, waits for me to get in and then hold the duvet up and I have to say "inside" and then she jumps in and curls into a ball by my tummy.
Does mean I have to be careful getting out of the bed to go to the loo in case I squash her getting back in. She only goes on my side because she's a bit scared of my oh!!
heck No! It is bad enough fighting for space with my husband, let alone two large dogs, well not large when compared to Finn or Clover perhaps! Ugh, sorry, the thought makes me shudder, I KNOW what my dogs do all day and what they roll in
Anyway, they'd ruin my bed linen.
They have their own mattress outside in their own room (hallway) they are quite comfy out there, food, water, hot and cold running cats, coyotes and the moon to howl at, they are quite content. No doubt they'd love my bed, but it isn't going to happen.
I don't, when mine was younger he had a crate but now he sleeps on a fluffy cushion on the sofa. Which he is more than happy with and so am I.
It wouldnt be fair on him to have him on the bed as if my situation was to change and i no longer wanted him to sleep on the bed and pushed him out he would become distressed as he likes his routine so remain the same.
