Does anyone still ride in a Barbour?

Barbour make much more than the old heavy jackets. I live near the main Barbour store and theres lots of choice. I have a couple, one of which was given to me by my son, but
I generally wear them for dog walking. For riding, I like Musto or Ariat because they're light and washable. Horses come with mud and rain.

I’ve got a musto but mines the short one which I love for drizzle and keeping warm but I hate the tops of my thighs being wet in proper cats and dogs 😢
It’s so easy to wash!

I remember mum hair dryer-ing my barbour after a rewax to “seal” it - maybe that’s why yours was soggy @catembi

My last 2 Barbour fell apart within 6 months musto are far superior quality these days .. the Barbour are not what they were.

Mine's not a "proper" Barbour - no way could I ever have afforded one! But its an old waxed jacket which has a similar look to the Barbour, and which I've had hanging around either grubby tackrooms or the back of my car since around 1985 or so!

It's never been washed, stinks like a polecat, but on a rainy day its always the first thing I shove on!!

It also comes in handy for little occasions e.g. when you're tacking up and need to keep the saddle dry, have used it to sit on when out-and-about watching horsey events (sharing it with two dogs!).

Indespensible little piece of kit, I shall mourn the loss of it when it finally falls apart on me.

Which style is yours and do you get a soggy bum from it pooling in saddle at back or does it have a split back?

I've had it several years and cant remember the style it has studs at the back so you can put the "tail" over the cantle sort of thing .hard to describe. it has a small autumn leaf design inside on the lining. I love love love it also useful in the garden or field for the dog to lie on or me to sit on just watching the horses. it could do with a re wax now tBH I just buy a tin of the wax apply and melt in with a hairdrier. not difficult to do.

Re-proofing is a pain, and is best done in the summer, when the weather is warm. It's less difficult if you have a helper, too.

That's good idea. I was doing it on a hot day in the garden with the tin standing in hot water. Sending it to Barbour would probably be expensive, but they'd probably do a better job than me.

I wouldn't shell out for a Barbour these days. I did have a 3/4 length stockmans coat that was quite useful in Scottish summer rain but wouldn't wear it in our winter. I have a full length drizabone somewhere.

This reminds me I have a (real) Barbour which I no longer wear - it’s in decent condition but could do with cleaning / re-proofing. I’m about a size 10, label says 91 cm.
It was passed on to me free so i’ll pass it on free to a good home for the cost of postage if anyone would like it.

I started to feel like I really belonged at the yard when I got my first waxed jacket as a 12yo. (Not an actual Barbour, of course, just a cheap copy.) But then there was the battle between me (who wanted it properly muddy and smelling of horses so I fitted in) and my mum (who thought I'd be wearing it to school as well as the yard, and therefore it needed to kept clean and not too smelly).

I won.

Yes and it's ancient and no I don't wear it for riding or for anything else really. It just hangs around because I keep thinking I might just wear it again. However, I have warmer, more waterproof coats that do a better job so it probably won't ever get worn again.

I've still got mine hanging in the garage. Hasn't moved for 5 years and I think it's next trip is to the dump. Stinks!!

I still wear one around horses but it gets taken off when I ride.

I have always used them and when I left home about 30 years ago various family members for very odd reasons had brand new ones that they were not going to use and they gave me. I am on the last of those coats now.

They are really good, but I will be interested to see if any more technical coats are now available that work as well.

It then moved on to being a yard/riding coat but I could only wear it when it was really cold and wet.
I think I wore it for 20 years then passed it on to a friend.
It’s now never really cold enough to wear one.
I also have an original Puffa jacket as well. I didn’t realise they no longer make them.

^^^^ This. I used to have waxed jackets (never could run to a Barbour) but they just got so dirty they used to almost walk away on their own. There is a Barbour outlet not too far from here and I did look at one for general (not yard) use. They told me the only way to clean them is to send them to Barbour to be cleaned and rewaxed. I bought a much more stylish shooting one in the end (sheer indulgence) but for me coats to wear around horses MUST be washable

I had one that was originally my husbands dog walking coat. Loved the smell. BUT, they are not warm. In heavy rain I felt cold.

I love my puffa and the puffa gilet. The original puffa jackets sell for A LOT of money on eBay and other fashion re selling sites as they are very trendy amongst young ones who seem to all dress in what I sent for the charity/bin. Could have made a small fortune!!

Still got my original long Barbour with the loops for your legs and my shorter riding coat. Both are over 30 years old and haven't been worn a n years but I can't bring myself to get rid of them.
