Does anyone take their dog out on hacks with them?

I know I've no need to explain, but I don't understand it myself and it is frustrating. And my point was that if a dog is running loose it can have a big impact on people like me. Funnily enough, I'm not bothered about all manner of really horrid things - spiders, rats, snakes....!!!

My dog is clicker trained but she responds well to voice commands too. I'm glad that other people feel confident in exercising their dogs off lead. I wouldn't do it if mine wasn't obedient but she is because of the way she has been trained and the way she is treated i.e. as a dog not a person. She also knows her place in the pecking order. She ranks below the 3 cats but just above the 2 fish!

I have no problem with dogs if they are well behaved and not anywhere near a road. I have had more than a number of unfortunate incidents where dogs have chased us when riding on a road or public bridleway and in one casse attacked my horse and brought her down on the road so I would ask anyone hacking out with their dogs or just walking their dogs to ensure that it does not chase, attack or frighten other horses.

I have no problem with riders doing this as long as their dog/s is under conrol. I have come across far too many riders who do this and their dogs are very dangerous and a real liability. Again, the few giving the rest a bad name.

I have no problem with people taking their dogs on a ride with them IF they can control them.
Mine came with me for the first time ever. She was an angel. What did worry me was we did some roadwork and I was so worried about a car seeing me and horse but not seeing dog.
It was nice but I won't be doing it again in a hurry. It worried me too much.

There is a woman local to me who takes her two dogs on rides. They are all over the road, aggressive with other dogs and generally a pain in the ass! She should be shot for the disservice she does for the horsey and doggy community.

A local farm used to have a collie cross that loved to follow horses -as soon as she heard the hooves she would run out and trot down the road with the horses. They got used to her but I used to cringe that the car drivers would think she was "with us" and we were being irresponsible. She would follow for about 1/4 mile then go home. Now she is chained up - I guess someone must have complained.

I used to take my old dog on quiet hacks with no roadwork involved, he loved it and was as good as gold

Sadly where I live now I do have roads to deal with, they are very quiet BUT that combined with my my new lad who is a speed freak that can't resist the wild chickens

means I wouldn't take him with us .

I am glad to see that there are far more people who think that riding with one's dog for company is a good thing (as long as the dog is obedient and non agressive and there is minimal or no roadwork and only on tiny, rarely used lanes). I love my dog and my horse and I am looking forward to spending time in their joint company. I just wish the nights weren't starting to draw in........

I used to take canine Puppy with me for years; there was a time we'd do miles most days. Being a GSD she is incredibly responsive and we'd get compliments from other riders about how well she would come and sit when called. She's been round horses from the first day she was old enough to leave the house and DEFINITELY knew Will and knows Star as opposed to Be or Billy. Sadly she is too old now

I do miss watching her bounding alongside.

I often take my lurcher out with me, and take a route that is 99% tracks where in 18 years I've hardly ever met a soul! The remaining 1% is the tiny lane from the path to our yard, where there is probably one car a week, but I still put the dog on a long piece of binder twine for that bit. It gives all three of us enormous joy to be out together, and it's such a shame that red tape is threatening these sorts of simple pleasures.

And lets be honest, when you have got three horses and two dogs to exercise daily it certainly helps if you can do them all in one hit!

For his eyes are sunken in! Ah, well done, I trained you well in the finer cat poems.

Whenever I take the YO's dogs out, they are fantastic. As soon as you shout them they come straight to you and if you say 'Stay Close' they never move from your side - they are brilliant
