We need a new towing vehicle. We are torn betrween the Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee. The Small vehicle ticks all the boxes, but just seems small. We have a Dihatsu Fortrak at present, and its such a good work horse we are worried that the Cherokee will not stand up to the punishment that we give it! This will have to tow the Ifor 511 with a big heavy 17.1 warmblood. Just worried that the smaller vehicle will not cope on hills etc. But prefer the smaller vehicle to the Grand for parking and general manoeverabilty. Would be interested to hear from anybody that has the small vehicle.

I have the short wheel base version. Mine is a petrol 3.7l and tows a Bateson Daeaville easily and up the Surrey hills. My biggest horse was getting on for 17.1 and my jeep had no problem, but I specifically went for a 3.7l as it had the same towing capacity of the long wheel base.

I am looking to go to a long wheel base soon but that's because I now have 3 dogs! Mine had been a real workhorse in all weathers and all terrains. Don't go to jeep for servicing as their prices are eye watering and do get a normal row bar fitted. Jeep wanted £ 540 to put one that was collapsible. Couldmt work with that so went for a normal tow bar at half the price. Bought mine with 14,000 on the clock and it is now 105k and still going strong.

I tow with a Jeep Cherokee 2.8CRD Automatic

I tow an Ifor williams with a 17'2 Dutch warmblood onboard and sometimes a 16'1 warmblood as well -

I did a lot of research before buying the Jeep as I needed an automatic that would have a towing capacity that would allow me to carry two large horses - the jeep has a capacity of 3.5 tonnes

Yes for everyday use it is a little thirsty - I average between 25 and 28 mpg but I am known for having a 'heavy right foot'

It tows really well and being automatic I think it is a smoother ride for the horses.

I have no problems on hills - having previously had a 6.6 ton lorry that used to really struggle on some of the hills local to us.

As to the cost of having a towbar fitted you may be surprised how many second hand ones out there already have one fitted, when I went 'shopping' last year I had a choice of 4 with towbars already fitted. I wouldn't pay Jeep that sort of money - it's ridiculous - any decent garage will be able to do a good job, and some of the Ifor Williams trailer sales places will be able to recommend someone if needed.

Whereabouts are you - if you are local you could come and have a try with mine (complete with trailer and horses) to see if you like it.

Ooops - just realised you are in Cornwall

My friend takes me and my 17hh ISH places with her 16'1 Irish guy with and automatic Jeep Cherokee, copes really well on big hills. Smooth ride and I don't think it is that small.

Many thanks for all your comments. We have decided to go for it. So hope that it lives up to the various reviews etc. Getting quite excited as it will be a lot more luxurious than our present Fortrak!
Thanks to Clannad48 for the offer of a test drive, but I think Bedfordshire is a little too far, but a lovely thought, thank you.
