As above really, we are thinking of getting one, the 2.5 DI-D 4WD 4Life double cab manual diesel. We would be towing mainly with one horse, approx 600kg and occasionally a 350kg pony also. We have an Ifor Williams HB505. Currently tow with an Audi A4 estate which manages fine with just the big horse, but wouldn't be able to tow the pony as well :( Another option was the Shogun short wheel base?

Any comments on experiences of the two Mitsubishi's would be much appreciated! :D Also any other suggestions of similar towing vehicles please :) Thank you!!

Hubby has a l200 triton the 3lt v6 petrol which is converted to gas also and i towed an ifor williams 510 to wales and back no problem.

We used to have an older swb Shogun which i loved towing with, i could back the trailer where i wanted it no problem. Changed to an L200, same as you're looking at, it tows ok, its a bit flat but it has just been chipped so hopefully will be better on power and fuel consumption. My main gripe is visibility, with the black back on i can't see the trailer, we've just put an IW aluminium back on which is a bit better.

We very nearly bought an L200 for towing, ended up getting a navara instead. Purely because our budget wouldn't stretch to the new shape L200 but would get the new shape navara so we had a more modern car for our money. If our budget hadn't been enough to get the D40 navara then the L200 would have won hands down.

Our navara tows one in a double trailer up our steep hills with no bother.

Ive towed with my L200 Warrior with no bother. The worst thing about L200's is the absolutely diabolical turning circle. You could do a 360 spin in a cruise liner in a smaller space!

This, I love my L200 for towing but parking in the supermarket is fun, people look at me funny as I pull forward to the opposite kerb and then have to reverse back, I need a flashing notice which says "I'm not rubbish, I am on full lock!"

If you have a B licence then so can you as a B+E learner with Dad sitting in

Thanks for that, what is the age to take the trailer test? Is it 21?

Thanks jrp204, Kat & Mildred.....yes my worry was the length of the L200 and plus the trailer on the back!!

Thanks everyone for the info :D

hmm yes the turning circle is interesting on the navara too, and with the trailer on it gets even more entertaining!

The HUUUUUUUGE load space is brilliant though, so much more room than a normal 4x4.

We tow a big trailer with an L200 double cab, it's great for towing, we have had 2 Shires up with no problems. Biggest -ive is the large turning circle required, it can restrict where you go.

I have been towing for a year and a half with my L200 and I love it! They are just like driving a car rather than a 4x4, just higher off the ground and yes an awful turning circle!

I have towed 2 bigguns in a 510 with no problem.... Very reliable

I don't have the back on mine so a bit of a pain on a rainy day! But with the back on it's great as loads of room for all the stuff you have to take!

I have also with a Barbarian, however I wasn't towing a horse but a car. Seemed good to me, however it felt massive (thank god for the reversing camera, also good for checking the trailer is still attached). However you have to be aware they can't tow as much as the Shogun can (less issue for you but my company tow for work so have to be aware of these things).

To prove that B+E is age 17 - click link and scroll to B+E

Sorry, i think i'm being really stupid here :rolleyes: I am 17, with a B licence. So can i take my trailer test now? And then legally tow a horse in the trailer?

Sorry if i'm being stupid!! :o

As this is your thread then I'll go into a little more detail as to what is possible on a B only licence - no B+E
Nissan X trail (4X4) with these specifications/dimensions
Unladen/kerb = 1515
GVW = 2050
Towing = 2000
Max trailer plated MAM = 1450 kgs
BATESON DERBY SINGLE HORSE TRAILER
Downplated from 1700 to 1450 - LOAD/HORSE = 775kgs

That particular vehicle & trailer would be legal to drive on a B licence at age 17
Reasons - the vehicle GVW 2050 added to the trailer MAM 1450 = 3500 which is the max allowed & the trailer MAM 1450 is not more than the vehicle kerb 1515

thank you :)

I tow with a l200 animal, a 510 and a large 17hh horse and it manages fine. We looked at the short wheel base shogun but the dealer told us that we could not tow the horse with it as has a habit of snaking about when towing a long trailer so not suitable to tow a horse .

And you can just sweep it out after, no hoovering, no stinking out the rest of the car.....

We have a hard top so it is reasonably waterproof too.

Same here, just hose the back out after dogs have been in there.
Tip-- Keep a brush or rake in the back, when the tailgate is down and gear has moved to the cab area you need 6 foot arms to get to it :D
