My horse can be very strong jumping and on crosscountry. Other than when doing dressage i ride him in a grackle noseband as he opens his mouth alot. i was just riding him with a snaffle or a waterford snaffle for jumping and particularly on crosscountry to steady him before a fence but hes a big strong boy and when excited this isnt enough.does anyone have any suggestions on another bit.He goes well in a rubber pelham with elastic curb chain but think this is maybe a too harsh combination with the grackle as well.Ive tried him in just a flash but he goes so much better in the grackle. Also is a pelham and grackle actually aloud when doing BS competitions (bsja)thanks

As far as I know yes it is aloud ... At home pony is ridden in a carverson noseband , copper roller snaffle and ridden in draw reins a few days a week.

Then at BS hes jumped in a grackle and Cheltnum gag.

I use a grackle and pelham (with both reins not roundings) it is the only combination where pony dosnt fight for her head and is very comfy in it.

When at HOYS this year in i think it was the riding horse of the year wore a pelham and grackle although i am unsure of the ruling of that combination in showing as i dont show

thankyou so i wont be told off at the weekend if i turn up in pelham with grackle then.he goes really well in it.and i only have to check him back rather than having a real struggle pulling him up in his snaffle.

I SJ and XC (BE and BS) in a jointed pelham, grackle and roundings. According to the great and the good of HHO this is a heinous thing to do because jointed pelhams don't work and roundings are only for idiots who can't ride. Thankfully no-one has seen fit to tell my horse this and he goes brilliantly for me in it ;)

I use a vulcanite pelham (with 2 reins) and grackle on my sec D -he can be very opinionated-in any situation where he s likely to get above himself!! I know some people will say more schooling is the answer but those who know "quirky" D s will know that sometimes you need a little extra help!! -he always seems quite happy & comfy in this combo!!xx

I ride my mare in a grackle and dutch gag with double reins for hunting and XC. The bottom reins only really come into play when I need extra brakes out hunting! She goes really well in this combination, sometimes she heats up and I need a bit more control when we're out at a party. We DR/school/hack in a flash and hanging french link snaffle. x

thanks everyone im glad its not just me.i know schooling helps but prob is he schools beautifully in a snaffle its just he gets excited when jumping.much more so at competitions as hes not too bad jumping at home so just need that little extra from the bit
