..In their joint supplements? And nothing else.. i.e no chrondroitin etc

My mare isn't old or stiff but theres a few little niggly things and after speaking to my vet, who said it wouldn't be a total waste of time giving her a joint supplement i want to find something inexpensive, so I thought these two would be OK for a while and then when she's a bit older go for a more substantial one!

So does anyone use these two ingredients and what do you think??

Thank you.

I use just MSM (Naf) as my mare has had a tendon tear and I read a lot of good reports about it. Something is working as shes been on it for months and is staying sound.

Too be honest if the vet has said that you don't really need it then I wouldn't bother.

Glucosamine is good and relatively reasonably priced - I wouldn't have thought that you would need to change to anything stronger later on as once in the bloodstream it should work regardless.

It'll take about two weeks to work (I used to take it)!

Hi thanks guys.

Just to clarify.. My vet suggested it would be a good idea... hence I was just wondering what everyone thought of these two. One of the other reasons was also that he had a meeting about joint supplements and alot of the joint supplements on the market didn't actually have the ingredients in that it stated.

I use the equine america one...very reasonable at £15.99
Cant say i have noticed any particular difference as there wasnt a problem to start with,i feed it for maintenance purposes and the fact it is very reasonably priced makes it doable for me!

That is true if I was to believe the NAF Rep. He was explaining just that to me at a saddlery (and I wasnt buying at the time so he wasnt trying to persuade me to buy their product) and the comparison was between NAF Superflex and a well known supplement beginning with C and ending in flex. I look after a mare who is on Superflex and seems to do well on it, she has arthritis in both hocks. My own mare has the Oestress and I swear by it.

I was thinking of just using the two ie MSM and Glucosamine from natural horse supplies for a while... seeing how that goes then going to a more expensive one in the future such as Equistro, consequin (sp) or something similar... It's tricky she was on suppleaze gold but not sure about that.

Thanks again.x

My horse went for a bone scan at Liphook Horsepital a year ago (they didn't find anything) and the top vet there told me to give glucosamine. When I questioned it as horse was only 6 yrs old, he said recommended that any horse in work could probably do with it. They are not made to work like they do!! So, I have given the Equine America one since then.

Our three were all on Cortaflex at vast expense but I have been using the Equine America product for about a year now. My vet said that the latest research pointed to it being the glucosamine in the Cortaflex that was doing the horses good but to be careful to feed a supplement with a decent amount of glucosamine in it, as they don't all.

Have a look at this thread, really interesting stuff about the quantities that should be used for MSM, Condroitin and glucosamine to be effective. There's a lot of analaysis of the most popular brand of joint supplements too. On the back of this I've gone from Cortaflex to the glucosamine/MSM only supplement and at £16 a tub for a it's much, much cheaper even over the same period than cortaflex. Like some of the others have said, I've used it more as a preventative than because there is a specific problem.
