I am trying to plan ahead in preparing Ella for the winter. She has arthritic knees, and i am assuming that , like human arthritis, she'll suffer more with them over the winter. Obviously she will be coming in at night and will be well wrapped-up, and she'll have a big comfy bed to stand / lie on.

Someone at my yard suggested magnetic wraps for her to wear when she is in overnight. Do these help with arthritis, are they a good idea, has anyone experience of using them, and are they better than bandages? I'm thinking of myself with that last one, really - I am not good at bandaging, and i am wary of putting them on too tight or something.

Well I've just answered you on my thread, but are you sure she is going to be worse in winter? I have arthritis, and yes, it is worse in winter, BUT my older horse is better in the winter months when the ground is softer, and I think she is FAAAAAAR better out than in

I don't know if she's going to be worse in winter, but I am assuming the worst. She likes her stable, and i would feel mean leaving her out at night in the cold weather. Of course, if it turns out that she's as stiff as a board after standing in, then I'll re-assess, but at the moment, the plan is for her to be out all day, in at night.

My old girl has to come in in the winter because our landlord does not allow the horses to be live out between October and April. I use magnetic boots on her and while they are not a silver bullet, I do think they help her cope with being stabled. She still gets lots of turnout and does light work every day.

I've never used magnetic therapy on a horse, but I used it on my dog with arthritic paws, it helped her for a while, but she eventually got to a point where the arthritis was too severe to be helped by magnetic. But on dogs, the magnetic can't be where the pain is, they have to wear a collar, so I think it probably does a better job on a horse, who can wear magnetic boots.
I wear magnetic knee support when my knee gets bad, and its amazing! I wouldn't hesitate to use magnets on any of my animals, as long as you are realistic as to how much they can do.
Hope that makes sense? I tend to waffle lol

magnetic boots work by increasing the blood flow to the area - I use mag brushing boots often and would use them on my old arthritic hunter - if he didn't take them off and eat them!
He's out during the day for a few hours and in overnight in the winter - he gets stiff behind if he's in too long but the arthritis seems ok. Better when he has a deep bed or rubber mats to stand on, not good when he has to stand on concrete to be shod.

Got a horse with arthritis in his coffin joints and he has mag overrearch boots - he definitely notices them as is more comfortable after he's worn them

My mare has very arthritic knees - you would hardly recognise them as knees given all the extra bone that has grown on them. She wears Bioflow wraps at night and is noticeably better walking out of her stable in the mornings when she comes in at night during the winter. I put them on her back legs though as she will try to take them off her front legs within 10 minutes of putting them on , so they must do something which irritates her a bit.
