My sons physiotherapist has suggested a private clinic for some silicone orthotics, these would stabalise his foot and ankle, hopefully enabling him to push his heels down, rather than toes down and ankles out when he is riding, he needs the stability of the stirrups to balance himself and I am sure If we can find a solution to his feet the riding would come on leaps and bounds. We have tried without stirrups but it causes him to tense up and slip to the side.

Do any of you currently use orthotics when riding? what type do you use and how do you find they help?

she also told me you can buy stirrups that help with Dorsiflexion and she is searching out the website!

Many thanks

A friend just directed me to Toe Stoppers which she thinks would be idea, cant seem to find an english company, but will try googling cage stirrups.
I also need to find some specialist reins with loops on the ends rather than normal reins, but I might be able to cobble some together using a couple of showing leads :)

For reins look at the Ernest Dillon precision reins.

I have ridden using a figure 8 ankle brace to support my badly damaged ankle ligaments. It served a purpose but I didn't feel it allowed me the movement I wanted. A different situation to yours though.

I have hyper mobility in my ankles and can easily stand on the side of my ankles (both of them together!) and still be upright. Never met anyone else with this ability, sort of my party trick.

Only downside is, I can't maintain normal ankle positions when riding. So, I use these on both ankles to stop the bottom of my ankle touching the sides of my horse -
