As title, Do you use them, how do you find them to ride in and why do you use them?

These ones (top of page) http://www.freedomrider.com/stirrupFR3.html

I have suggested them to a 12 year old girl I give lessons to as she rides with the side of her foot on an angle and finds it really difficult to straighten up.

Like this!!

Used to when I was younger. Think they would work for the girl you teach. They did make your foot more secure in the stirrup and certainly stopped me loosing stirrups as much when learning to ride. Not sure if that was the intention at the time! Brings back lots of memories. Didnt realise you could still get them.

Wouldnt advise jumping too much in them.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the reply!!

Yeah you can still get them! Was only thinking for flat/schooling really, I have jumped in them before and found them really uncomfortable!!!

I was going to post about this myself, but kept forgetting

I used to ride in them up untill only a few weeks ago.. i don't know why i started riding in them in the first place, probably because i'd seen proper dressage riders use them and though anything might help.. i've just stopped riding in them because my instructor told me to, giving a long explanation of which i can't really remember.. sorry

Isn't that funny - they were massively popular a billion years ago where I'm from but I've hardly seen a pair in years. Replaced by Sprenger-type and adjustable angle stirrups and similar, I guess.

Might be worth a try for a cheap experiment but their effectiveness will really depend on why she's doing what she's doing. She could still load one side of her foot in them. The catch is they will work best if her ankle is supple but it might be a stiff ankle that's part of the problem in the first place and the biggest danger of them is they can "wedge" or "lock" the ankle in an unnatural/incorrect position, thereby jeopardising the effectiveness of her leg even if it "looks" better.

But again, a little time in them might provide her with a guide to making the change if the eventual goal is to go back to a more standard tread.

I ride in them all the time - they came with my Whitaker brass stirrups, and I never bothered to try any flat ones! I love the wedges - I jumped in them all the time, and really felt they gave me a secure leg position
